Israel bombs Lebanon's historic port city

(CLO) Israeli airstrikes across Gaza killed 42 people on Wednesday as Israeli forces intensified their siege of northern areas of the Palestinian enclave. In Lebanon, in particular, Israel heavily bombed the historic port city of Tyre.

Israel began bombing the UNESCO-listed port of Tyre in southern Lebanon on Wednesday. Tens of thousands of people have fled Tyre in recent weeks as Israel steps up its campaign to crush Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The port city is usually a bustling hub for southern Lebanon – with fishermen, tourists and even UN peacekeepers taking a break. But this week’s Israeli evacuation order includes parts of Tyre for the first time, right up to the city’s ancient castle.

Will Lebanon become like Gaza?

Some Lebanese fear their country will end up like the Gaza Strip, which Israel has virtually flattened and continues to intensify its attacks on the northern part of the territory.

Israeli forces began an operation in northern Gaza about three weeks ago with the stated aim of preventing Hamas militants from regrouping. The operation has been intensified since the assassination of Hamas leader Yahya Al-Sinwar a week ago.

The international community had hoped that Sinwar's death might bring new impetus to peace in Gaza, but so far Israeli forces appear to have only stepped up their attacks, especially in northern areas.

Residents said Israeli troops had surrounded shelters, forcing residents in northern Gaza to continue to evacuate. Health authorities said at least 650 people had been killed since the new offensive began.

Of the at least 42 people newly reported killed in Israeli air strikes across the enclave on Wednesday, 37 died in northern Gaza.

"Give us the shroud"

The Gaza Civil Emergency Rescue Service said three of its rescue workers were injured in northern Gaza in a “targeted attack” aimed at forcing them to leave Jabalia. The agency later said all operations in northern Gaza had been suspended after Israeli forces arrested five of its workers and bombed the only fire truck.

"Our work in the North Gaza Governorate has completely stopped and the situation there has become catastrophic, with the population now without any humanitarian services," the civil emergency agency said in a statement.

The United Nations Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA said on Wednesday that one of its staff was killed when a UNRWA vehicle was hit by gunfire in Deir Al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip. Medical workers said the man's brother was also killed.

Dozens of Palestinian bodies killed by Israeli fire in Jabalia and surrounding areas were scattered on roadsides and under rubble where medical teams could not reach them, medical and civil emergency officials said.

"We call on the world, which has failed to protect and shelter our people, and has failed to provide food and medicine, to provide shrouds for our dead," the Gaza Health Authority said in a statement.
