(CLO) An Israeli airstrike killed at least 30 Palestinians and wounded 50 others taking shelter in a post office in the central Gaza Strip, bringing the death toll in the enclave to 66 on Thursday.
Israel's 14-month war in Gaza shows no signs of abating, medics say, with air strikes hitting a post office facility in the Nuseirat refugee camp where displaced families seek shelter.
Nuseirat is one of eight historic camps in the Gaza Strip that were originally intended for Palestinian refugees from the 1948 war surrounding the creation of Israel. Today, it is part of a densely populated urban area with displaced people from across the land.
Earlier on Thursday, two Israeli air strikes in southern Gaza killed 13 Palestinians who Gaza medics said were part of a force guarding a humanitarian aid truck. The Israeli military said they were Hamas militants trying to hijack the shipment.
However, some reports suggest that armed gangs have repeatedly hijacked aid trucks, and Hamas has formed a task force to confront them. Hamas-led forces have killed more than two dozen gang members in recent months, according to Hamas sources and medical staff.
Hamas said Israeli airstrikes had killed at least 700 police officers tasked with guarding aid trucks in Gaza since the war began on October 7, 2023. Hamas accused Israel of trying to protect looting and "create chaos and anarchy to prevent aid from reaching the people of Gaza".
The Israeli military on Thursday ordered residents of several districts in central Gaza City to evacuate further. “This is a warning before the attack,” an Israeli military statement posted on X said. The evacuation orders have sparked a new wave of displacement. By dusk, dozens of families were streaming out of the area toward the city center.
Months of efforts by Egyptian, Qatari and US mediators to negotiate a ceasefire have yielded little. On Wednesday, the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to demand an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire and the immediate release of all hostages seized in Israel in October 2023 and held by Hamas in Gaza.
Israel's war flattened large swaths of Gaza, forcing nearly all of its 2.3 million people from their homes, triggering famine and deadly disease, and killing more than 44,800 people.
