Israel reveals details of raid on 'Iran-linked missile factory' in Syria

The Israeli military announced on January 2 that its special forces had raided an underground missile manufacturer in Syria on September 8, 2024.

Speaking at a press conference on January 2, Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani of the Israeli army affirmed that the above factory, near the city of Masyaf in northwestern Syria, is "a bright spot in Iran's production efforts".

“This facility is designed to produce hundreds of strategic missiles every year, from start to finish, for Hezbollah to use in air strikes on Israel,” Shoshani said. Hezbollah is based in Lebanon and is backed by Iran.

Mr Shoshani said the factory, located deep in the mountainside, had been monitored by Israel since construction began in 2017 and would soon be able to produce precision-guided missiles, some with a range of up to 300 km.

Details of the September 8 raid have been reported by Israeli media, but Shoshani said this was the first time the Israeli military had confirmed the information. The Israeli military rarely comments on special forces operations.

“This is one of the most important preventive actions we have taken to counter the Iranian axis’ efforts to arm us with weapons to attack us,” Shoshani said.

The raid on the night of September 8 was “one of the most complex operations the Israeli military has carried out in recent years,” Shoshani added. Along with airstrikes, the raid involved dozens of aircraft and about 100 soldiers from helicopters, according to Shoshani.

“At the end of the raid, the army dismantled the facility, including machinery and production equipment,” Shoshani added. The Israeli army also released footage showing its soldiers getting on and off a helicopter and moving through a concrete tunnel and an industrial area where they inspected documents.

At the time, Syrian state media reported that at least 16 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes in western Syria.

There is currently no information about the reaction of Iran or Hezbollah to the above statement of the Israeli army.

Israeli officials have accused the former Syrian government of ousted President Bashar al-Assad of helping Hezbollah obtain weapons from Iran and have said they are determined to stop the flow of weapons into Lebanon, according to Reuters.

When the al-Assad regime collapsed on December 8, 2024, Israel launched a series of airstrikes on Syrian military infrastructure and weapons production sites to prevent them from falling into enemy hands, according to Reuters.

Syrian state television reported early this morning that an Israeli airstrike targeted military facilities in the town of Safira in Syria's Aleppo province, but did not provide details, according to Reuters. There was no immediate information about Israel's response.
