AFP news agency on January 14 quoted Palestinian and Israeli sources as saying that Israeli soldiers had arrested two sisters of Saleh al-Aruri, a top Hamas leader who was killed in Lebanon on January 2. The Palestinian Prisoners Club - an advocacy group - said Dalal al-Aruri, 52, and Fatima al-Aruri, 47, were arrested at locations near the city of Ramallah.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military confirmed it had arrested two women in the West Bank “after they incited terrorism against the state of Israel”.
The Israeli military accused Saleh al-Aruri of participating in planning the Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7, which killed 1,140 people.
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on January 14 called for the establishment of a Palestinian state and a ceasefire in Gaza, an area that has witnessed 100 days of Israel-Hamas war that has killed thousands of people.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry in the Egyptian capital, China's top diplomat stressed the "resolute need to establish an independent, fully sovereign Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital."
A joint statement from the two countries' foreign ministers also called on all parties involved to immediately end "all acts of violence, killings and targeting of civilians and civilian facilities".
Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his counterpart Shoukry called for "an international peace summit to find a just, comprehensive and lasting solution to the Palestinian cause by ending the (Israeli) occupation and establishing an independent, contiguous Palestinian state".
