(CLO) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that powerful countries should not bully weak countries, while affirming Beijing's commitment to maintaining the multilateral system and protecting developing countries.

The remarks came at a foreign policy conference in Beijing on Friday.

Mr. Wang said that in the context of an increasingly unstable world , the United Nations needs to maintain its central position in the global governance system. China is committed to playing a pivotal role in this system and speaking out to protect the interests of countries in the Global South.

According to him, maintaining the principle of sovereign equality is a prerequisite to prevent the return of the "law of the jungle" in international relations.

China has also taken a tough stance against US pressure, especially on tariffs and the fentanyl issue. Wang Yi criticized the US for imposing additional tariffs on Chinese goods and said China would not accept unreasonable pressure.

He stressed that some countries are trying to use power to impose their will on others, but China will not let that happen.

Regarding the Ukraine war, Mr. Wang Yi reaffirmed China's stance in promoting a "fair, lasting and binding peace agreement" that all parties can accept.

Meanwhile, the change in US foreign policy under President Donald Trump is also a topic of interest. The Trump administration has withdrawn from many multilateral organizations, reduced foreign aid and taken a softer stance towards Russia.

Mr. Wang called on developing countries to improve their representation in international organizations, warning that if major countries only pursue their own interests and ignore international law, the world will fall into chaos.

"The powerful should not chase after profits and should not bully the weak," he stressed.

Amidst the changing US foreign policy, China wants to demonstrate its stability, willingness to cooperate and push for a fairer international system.
