Indonesia plans to build a light rail transit (LRT) system on the popular resort island of Bali next year to ease road congestion from the airport.

Bali attracts millions of foreign tourists every year, but the narrow roads that dot the island have been plagued by heavy traffic since reopening following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The LRT will be built underground, connecting the island's international airport to the popular tourist areas of Canggu and Seminyak, according to CNA, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Pandjaitan. The airport is expected to handle 24 million visitors a year by 2025-2026.

The project, championed by President Joko Widodo, has attracted investment interest from Seoul, Tokyo and Beijing.
