On the morning of May 5, a vast rice field in Hoa Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district collapsed. Ms. Nguyen Thi Oanh - a resident of Hoa Thanh commune who is currently repairing and rebuilding the collapsed rice fields said: My family planted 4 sao of rice and was about to harvest when all 4 sao collapsed. This year's rice crop was a good one, previously, the expected yield was 3.8 quintals/sao. Now all the rice has fallen off, the rice is soaked in water so it is expected to only reach over 2 quintals/sao, a heavy loss.
A representative of Hoa Thanh Commune People's Committee said: Hoa Thanh Commune has nearly 200 hectares of spring rice crop, and in the recent storms and winds, over 12 hectares of rice were destroyed. Currently, the commune is directing hamlets to mobilize people to fix, set up, and bundle rice, waiting for favorable weather to harvest. Currently, the commune has mobilized 10 harvesters to harvest rice for the people, according to the plan, in the next 3-4 days, people will simultaneously harvest spring rice.
Mr. Le Van Hong - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Yen Thanh district said: This spring crop, Yen Thanh district planted over 12,700 hectares of rice, the heavy rain and storms from May 3-5, Yen Thanh district suffered the most damage, with over 100 hectares of rice that were ready for harvest being knocked down, making it difficult to harvest. Communes with large areas of fallen rice include Nhan Thanh, Tang Thanh, Yen Thanh town, Hop Thanh...
Currently, Yen Thanh district has directed localities to guide people to urgently overcome the collapsed rice fields by draining water in the fields, erecting trees, and bunching rice into clusters. For the rice fields that are ripe, harvest early to ensure productivity and minimize damage. It is expected that by May 20, Yen Thanh district will finish harvesting spring rice.
