Previously, at around 5:50 p.m. on May 21, Vang Duc Q. (born in 2014, residing in Nam Tra village, Gia Phu commune), a 5A student at Gia Phu commune's Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, and Phan Van Tr. (born in 2014, residing in Nam Phang village, Gia Phu commune), a 4B student at the same school, after dinner went swimming in the stream and drowned in the stream area of ​​Nam Tra village of the commune.

The stream area is about 200m from the school. The incident was discovered by students and reported to the boarding teachers. Upon receiving the news, the teachers and local people were present and performed first aid, but the two students did not survive. At the time of the drowning, teachers were present at the school to manage the boarding students.
