(Dan Tri) - The goal of gender equality is to eliminate gender discrimination, creating equal opportunities for men and women in socio-economic development and human resource development.
On the morning of November 13, Thua Thien Hue province held a ceremony to launch the Month of Action for Gender Equality and Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence in 2024. The event has the theme "Ensuring social security, empowering and creating opportunities for women and girls" to promote gender equality and eliminate gender-based violence.
This month of action is aimed at attracting attention and promoting the role and responsibility of individuals, families, communities, agencies and organizations in preventing and combating violence and abuse against women and children.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Permanent Vice Chairman of Thua Thien Hue Provincial People's Committee, gender equality is one of the important goals that countries around the world are aiming for, to build a progressive, equal and sustainably developed society.
The goal of gender equality is to eliminate gender discrimination, create equal opportunities for men and women in socio-economic development, human resource development, and move towards real gender equality; establish and strengthen cooperative and supportive relationships between men and women in all areas of social and family life.
In recent times, gender equality work in Thua Thien Hue has achieved many positive results, contributing to reducing male chauvinism, gender inequality and gender-based violence. Women's participation in economic and social fields, especially politics, has had positive changes, enhancing the power of women and girls.
However, gender inequality and gender-based violence still exist. The idea of preferring sons over daughters is still widespread, especially in economically disadvantaged and remote areas. Domestic violence still occurs, with 37 cases and 12 girls being abused recorded in 2023.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh called on all levels, sectors and the whole society to join hands in implementing gender equality, preventing and responding to gender-based violence not only during the month of action but also as a continuous, regular and ongoing process.
Gender equality work needs to be substantive, ensuring conditions for women to have full access to economic resources, build happy and prosperous families, and aim to build a safe and equal community for everyone.
At the launching ceremony, leaders of Thua Thien Hue province, units and individuals presented many gifts and funds to support women in difficult circumstances in building livelihood models and repairing houses.
