The electronic version of the Koh Santepheap (Peace Island) daily newspaper in Cambodia has just published an article by authors Previn and Heng Chesta, which reviews recent developments in politics and the socio-economic situation in Cambodia, placing high expectations on new Prime Minister Hun Manet and the young cabinet of the new government in the operation and leadership of the country with the new vision and thinking of young people who have been well-educated abroad.
Titled “Can Hun Manet become a hero like his father?”, the article reads as follows:
Will Hun Manet, who was recently appointed as the new Prime Minister by the King, become a hero like his father? This is a question of great interest, in the context of Cambodia's decision to give the opportunity to a new generation to lead the country.
Hun Manet is scheduled to lead the new Cabinet from August 22, after the new National Assembly with 25 members of parliament votes for confidence. Cambodia will not only have a young Prime Minister, but also a majority of ministers from the next generation. Therefore, the leadership of Hun Manet and his young Cabinet has attracted much attention after his father, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, stepped down as Prime Minister after nearly 4 decades in office.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen is a symbol of peace, national unity and national development, considered a hero of Cambodia. Therefore, from the end of August, all eyes of domestic and international public opinion will be on the leadership role of Mr. Hun Manet, to see if he is as talented as his father?
Committed to continuing to bring peace, social stability, economic development and a better life for the Cambodian people.
Mr. Hun Manet became Prime Minister of Cambodia by Royal Decree on August 7. Immediately after, he sent a letter expressing gratitude and pledging to lead Cambodia in peace, stability and progress.
In a letter dated August 7 to the King of Cambodia, Mr. Hun Manet, son of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, wrote: “I, along with the dignitaries in the Royal Government of the 7th tenure of the National Assembly, pledge to fulfill this noble mission, serve the nation, the fatherland and the people of Cambodia with courage, honesty and high responsibility, continue to protect national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, protect the throne and the constitutional monarchy in Cambodia, ensure the maintenance of peace and social stability, promote national development and improve the lives of the Cambodian people, as well as enhance the country's prestige in the international arena.”
Through the above letter, Mr. Hun Manet sent a commitment to the people that he would be a good leader for the country and the Cambodian people. He committed to maintaining peace, developing the country, especially improving the lives of the Cambodian people like developed countries. However, promoting economic development in the current period will be a difficulty for him and the new Cabinet, requiring a strong and substantial effort from all members of his Cabinet.
As a young intellectual, Dr. Hun Manet joined the army in 1995 and studied military science at the world-famous military academy West Point in the United States in 1999. He continued to study for a Master's degree in economics at New York University in 2002 and received a PhD in economics from the University of Bristol, UK in 2008.
In his personal life, Dr. Hun Manet is married to Ms. Pech Chanmony, who also holds a PhD in Public Health from the United Kingdom and is currently the Vice President of the Executive Board of the Samdech Techo Volunteer Young Doctors Association. They have 3 children, 2 daughters and 1 son. Dr. Hun Manet and Ms. Pech Chanmony have become prominent in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic in Cambodia in the years 2020-2022.
In terms of politics, Dr. Hun Manet received support within the ranks of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) as a candidate for the next Prime Minister, after being promoted to the Central Standing Committee and serving as Chairman of the CPP's Youth Committee, not to mention his achievements in modernizing the military during his tenure as Army Commander and Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.
Based on work experience, educational background, family life organization and obligations and duties to the country, this Doctor will choose a new Cabinet consisting of young individuals and intellectuals with work experience and high educational level, knowing how to steer and promote the country's development speed.
In short, as an intellectual trained in Western powers, acquiring experience as well as many lessons passed down through social interactions and through family traditions with his father who led the country for 38 years, 7 months and 8 days, Dr. Hun Manet can summarize and shape a new policy vision and leadership path, suitable for the context and social life in Cambodia, as well as the current globalization trend.
Hun Manet - the new leader of Cambodia - will be the new hope of the country and the Cambodian people.
