Paying a high price for learning how to make fireworks online
Emergency treatment at Viet Duc Hospital with two hands soaked in blood, the faces of NK (13 years old) and NTA (14 years old, both living in Vinh Phuc) could not help but be scared.
K said: “We learned how to make firecrackers through YouTube tutorials. After pouring in the gunpowder, we were tightly rolling up the paper shell when the firecrackers exploded.”
A boy is treated at Viet Duc Hospital after a homemade firecracker accident.
As for K, because the injuries were so severe, both thumbs could not be saved. The doctor performed amputation surgery to try to save the remaining fingers.
Dr. Pham Hong Van, Central Eye Hospital, informed that on the night of December 8, the hospital received emergency treatment for two male patients with severe eye injuries caused by homemade fireworks.
Among them, CVP (16 years old, residing in Lang Son) was transferred with a ruptured eyeball in his left eye and complete loss of vision. According to his family, P was making homemade firecrackers (a type of mortar rolled in paper) when the firecrackers exploded, causing the accident.
"Although the patient received emergency surgery that night, his health is now stable, but there is a high risk of permanent vision loss," Dr. Van said.
NBM (22 years old, residing in Nghe An) was hospitalized with a large, complex wound in his left eye that pierced the sclera. It is known that while putting explosives into a plastic tube to make a firecracker, the firecracker exploded, causing the plastic tube to explode, with pieces of plastic stuck straight into the patient's face and eyes.
Can be life threatening
Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Manh Khanh, Deputy Director of Viet Duc Hospital, said that during and near Tet, the number of accidents caused by homemade firecrackers always increases. These accidents not only cause serious physical injuries but also leave serious psychological and financial consequences for patients and their families.
Mr. Khanh added that homemade fireworks pose a risk of causing serious burns, bodily injury and even death if they explode. Common injuries include burns to the face, neck, arms, legs and can cause respiratory burns, even in some cases requiring amputation.
Fireworks burns, if not properly cared for and deep, will leave ugly scars, contractures, require long-term treatment, endanger life, and affect motor function and life function later on.
Colonel Nguyen Trong Toan, Department of Administrative Management of Social Order, Ministry of Public Security, acknowledged that although fireworks are banned, the ingredients that make up fireworks are dual-use chemicals, used for many other production purposes, so they cannot be completely banned.
Therefore, the goal is to combat and prevent the misuse of chemicals, especially for making fireworks and illegal fireworks production.
“All acts of manufacturing, producing, storing, or setting off fireworks are illegal and may be subject to administrative or criminal penalties.
Therefore, people need to strictly comply with the law. In addition, families and schools need to strengthen management, propaganda and education so that children can recognize wrongdoings," Mr. Toan emphasized.
Sharing the same opinion, Dr. Manh Khanh recommends: "Children and teenagers should not research and follow instructions on making fireworks online to avoid endangering themselves and those around them.
Making homemade fireworks is not only illegal but also poses a high risk of causing serious injury, even death.
Currently, social networks are flooded with videos instructing how to make firecrackers, attracting thousands of views. Buying materials to make firecrackers is also very easy, with many personal accounts openly selling them.
Although authorities have taken action against a number of violators and websites, the practice remains widespread. Videos showing how to make fireworks are still widely available, despite penalties.
