The Honda Super Cub, once known as the “golden teardrop” of the motorcycle industry, is the world’s best-selling model, with more than 110 million units sold since its launch. However, sales of small-displacement models in Japan have plummeted, to just 92,824 units last year, down from a peak of 2.78 million in 1982.
Honda stops producing the "teardrop gold" Super Cub 50
According to Nikkei Asia, the push for Euro 5 emissions standards from 2020 was the main reason for Honda to abandon this product line. Strict limits on hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions have posed a major challenge to maintaining production of the Super Cub 50.
The Super Cub series is not only outstanding in sales but also a symbol of simplicity, reliability and ease of use. First introduced in 1958, this model quickly became an indispensable part of the daily life of people around the world, not only in Japan but also in many other countries, including Vietnam.
Currently, Honda continues to provide other motorbike models with a capacity of under 50cc such as Super Cub C125, Cross Cub, Benly Scooter and CRF50F.
