According to data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) and Hyundai Thanh Cong, total sales of C-class sedans in the first 6 months of 2024 reached 5,369 vehicles, down 22% compared to the same period last year (6,887 vehicles). The rankings of car models have not changed much, domestically assembled cars still account for the majority of sales compared to completely imported cars.

Topping the rankings are still two Japanese and Korean models assembled and distributed by Thaco in Vietnam. Mazda3 leads with 2,054 cars sold in the first half of 2024, accounting for 38% of the segment market share. However, this sales figure is still lower than the same period last year when Mazda3 sold 2,588 cars.

Kia K3 ranked second with 1,510 vehicles, accounting for 28% of the market share. It is worth noting that Kia K3 is a rare model with sales growth compared to the previous year, when in the first half of 2023, only 1,495 vehicles were sold.

Honda Civic in Vietnam market

Hyundai Elantra ranked third with 811 units, a sales level only half that of the second-place model. In the same period last year, Elantra sold 1,297 units. Honda Civic followed closely behind with sales of 786 units in the first half of 2024, up slightly from 654 units in the same period last year. This growth helped Honda Civic gradually narrow the gap with Hyundai Elantra, to only 25 units.

Toyota Corolla Altis ranked last with only 208 cars sold in the first 6 months of 2024, while in the same period last year, the Japanese car model sold 853 cars, ranking 4th.

Mazda3 and Kia K3 have always been C-class sedans chosen by many Vietnamese customers. Although launched in 2021, both models assembled by Thaco have a big advantage in terms of lower selling price compared to imported models, enjoy preferential registration fees and have many diverse versions, suitable for the needs of most customers. This duo has undergone many price reductions since its launch.

Elantra and Corolla Altis are the two models with the largest sales decline in the segment year by year. This decline has created an opportunity for Honda Civic to rise, currently approaching Elantra's 3rd place. With a gap of only 25 cars, it is very likely that in the second half of 2024, Honda Civic will continue its growth momentum and surpass Hyundai Elantra, making a strong impression on the C-class sedan market in Vietnam.
