Hanoi – Approximately 6,100 students gathered at the Hanoi University of Education's High School for Gifted Students on the morning of June 1st to compete for 315 places at the school.

According to the schedule, candidates were called into the examination room at 6:30 AM. Therefore, from around 6 AM, thousands of students and parents were present at the Hanoi University of Education High School for Gifted Students, causing traffic congestion on Xuan Thuy Street, Cau Giay District, the section passing through the school gate.

Many parents rushed, letting their children get off the car and walk into the school first, fearing they would be late. Some children sat behind their fathers on the motorbike, taking advantage of the time to check the exam room layout on their phones.

Arriving at the exam site at 5:45 AM, Nguyen Tuan Minh, from Phuc Dien Secondary School in Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi, was still wearing his usual uniform and a red scarf. Minh said that red is his lucky color, so he wore the scarf for good fortune.

Today, the male student was driven to his exam by his grandfather, who is over 80 years old, on an old motorbike. Minh recounted that his grandfather had used this same motorbike to take his mother and aunt to their exams in the past, and they both achieved good results.

In addition to the specialized Literature exam at the Teacher Training High School, Minh also registered to take the entrance exams for the Specialized High School for Social Sciences and Humanities and Hanoi - Amsterdam High School, which will take place on June 4th and June 12th, respectively. The male student said that about 10 days prior, he had requested time off from school to focus on studying for his specialized subject. After this exam, Minh will dedicate more time to studying English, a subject he feels he hasn't done well in.

Despite being mentally prepared, Minh was still overwhelmed by the sheer number of candidates today. The specialized Literature class that Minh applied for had a competition ratio of 1 in 28.5, an increase from last year's 1 in 18.3.

"I hope today's Literature exam will focus on revolutionary poetry, because my grandfather is a veteran. I've been inspired by him and heard him tell many stories from the war," Minh said.

Tuệ Minh, a student at Yên Bài Secondary School in Quỳnh Phụ District, Thái Bình Province, traveled to Hanoi with her mother last night. They rented a guesthouse 2 km from the school and arrived at the exam site with their belongings at over 5 am, even though they weren't allowed into their rooms until 6:30 am.

Sitting on the school grounds, Tue Minh opened her Literature review book, covered in colorful markers, to reread before the first exam. Her mother sat beside her, fanning her with a notebook to keep her cool.

"This is my first important exam. I really want to get into this school because it's a high-quality institution. Seeing how beautiful the campus is, I want to study here even more," Minh shared.

Having enrolled in the specialized Math class at the Teacher Training High School, along with the specialized High School for Natural Sciences and Thai Binh High School, Minh had to start preparing from the beginning of middle school. She took extra Math classes 2-3 times a week and dedicated two more sessions to Literature and English. The female student said she wanted to attend a specialized school to develop comprehensively in both knowledge and skills, increasing her chances of getting into top universities later on.

This morning, candidates applying to the 10th grade specialized classes at Hanoi University of Education took the general Literature and Mathematics exams (conditional subjects), each lasting 90 minutes and in essay format. In the afternoon, they will take the specialized subject exam for 120 minutes. Candidates will take the exam in the subject corresponding to the specialized class they applied for, except for the Computer Science class, which will take the Mathematics exam.

The admission score is the sum of the scores in the three subjects, with the specialized subject weighted twice. The High School for Gifted Students affiliated with the University of Education does not add any priority points for any candidate.

With approximately 6,100 candidates participating, the entrance exam for the 10th grade at the High School for Gifted Students affiliated with the University of Education was the largest since 2018. In recent years, the number of students registering for the exam has fluctuated between 4,500 and 5,400, while the enrollment quota has remained almost unchanged.

In mid-May, the High School for Gifted Students affiliated with the University of Education announced that its specialized English class had the highest number of applicants – 2,049. With an enrollment quota of 70, the competition ratio for this class is 1/29.3, meaning that only one out of every 30 applicants will be admitted.

Next is the competition ratio for the specialized Literature class, at 1/28.5. The school is recruiting 35 students but received 998 applications. Other specialized classes have competition ratios ranging from 1/10.2 to 1/19.8, with the Biology class having the lowest ratio.

The results will be announced before July 31st.
