Hanoi About 6,100 students were present at Hanoi National University of Education High School for the Gifted to compete for 315 places to enter the school on the morning of June 1.

According to the plan, candidates were called into the exam room at 6:30. Therefore, from around 6:00, thousands of students and parents were present at the Hanoi National University of Education High School for the Gifted, causing traffic congestion on Xuan Thuy Street, Cau Giay District, the section passing through the school gate.

Many parents were in a hurry, letting their children get off the bus and walk to school first for fear of being late. Some children sat behind their father's car, taking the opportunity to open their phones to look at the exam room map.

Present at the exam site at 5:45, Nguyen Tuan Minh, from Phuc Dien Secondary School, Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi, was still wearing his usual uniform and a red scarf. Minh said that red is the color of his destiny, so he still wore the scarf for good luck.

Today, the male student was taken to the exam by his grandfather who is over 80 years old on an old motorbike. Minh said that he used this same motorbike to take his mother and aunt to the exam before, both with good results.

In addition to the Pedagogical School, Minh also registered for the Social Sciences and Humanities High School and the Hanoi - Amsterdam High School, which will take place on June 4 and June 12, respectively. The male student said that about 10 days ago, he asked for leave from school to focus on reviewing his specialized subject. After this exam, Minh will spend more time reviewing English, a subject he feels he has not done well in.

Although he had prepared himself mentally, Minh was still overwhelmed by the large number of candidates today. The Literature class that Minh had registered for had a competition ratio of 1/28.5, up from 1/18.3 last year.

"I hope today's Literature exam will focus on revolutionary poetry, because my grandfather is a veteran. I was inspired and heard him tell many stories about wartime," Minh said.

Tue Minh, who lives in Quynh Phu district, Thai Binh province, went to Hanoi with her mother from Yen Bai secondary school last night. Renting a motel 2 km from the school, the mother and daughter carried their belongings to the exam location at 5am, even though they were not allowed to enter the room until 6:30am.

Sitting in the school yard, Tue Minh opened his Literature review book with its many colored markers to read again before taking the first exam. Minh's mother sat next to him, fanning him with a notebook.

"This is my first important exam. I really want to get into this school because it has good quality. When I got there and saw how beautiful the school was, I wanted to study here even more," Minh shared.

Enrolling in the specialized Math class of the Pedagogical School, along with the Natural Science High School and Thai Binh High School, Minh had to study from the time she entered secondary school. She took extra Math classes 2-3 times a week and spent two more sessions on Literature and English. The female student said she wanted to go to the specialized school to comprehensively develop both knowledge and skills, improving her chances of entering top universities in the future.

This morning, candidates for the 10th grade entrance exam at Hanoi National University of Education took the Literature and Math exams (conditional subjects), each taking 90 minutes in essay format. In the afternoon, they took the specialized subject exam for 120 minutes. Candidates who register for a specialized class will take the corresponding subject exam, except for IT classes, which will take the Math exam.

The admission score is the total score of three subjects, in which the specialized subject is multiplied by a coefficient of two. The University of Education High School for the Gifted does not add priority points to all candidates.

With about 6,100 candidates participating, the entrance exam for grade 10 at the National University of Education High School for the Gifted was the most crowded since 2018. In recent years, the number of students registering for the exam fluctuated between 4,500 and 5,400. Meanwhile, the quota remained almost unchanged.

In mid-May, the University of Education High School for the Gifted announced that the English-specialized class had the most applicants - 2,049. With a quota of 70, the competition ratio for this class is 1/29.3, meaning that for every 30 candidates, only one is admitted.

Next is the competition ratio for the Literature specialized class at 1/28.5. The school recruited 35 students but received 998 applications. The other specialized classes have competition ratios ranging from 1/10.2 to 1/19.8, with the lowest being the Biology specialized class.

Results will be announced before July 31.
