"All six electric cars made by students majoring in Automotive Engineering Technology are working well so far. We change the batteries once every two years, at a cost of VND2.2 million/battery, and each car has 4-6 batteries - depending on the type," said MSc. Nguyen Van Tong Em, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Nam Can Tho University (Can Tho) at the opening ceremony of the 2024-2025 school year held on the morning of September 20.

Students of Nam Can Tho University successfully built this electric car model.

According to Master Tong Em, the students are currently building two more electric cars, but they will only be used for internal transportation within the school.

"For a long time, the car has only been used internally, because selling it on the market requires complicated paperwork. But in the future, we will consider mass production for sale," added Master Tong Em.

Currently, the price of electric cars that the school's students make is around 40 million VND for a four-seater car.

The vehicle takes about 5 hours to fully charge the battery and can operate continuously for about 40km, with a maximum speed of 40km/h.

Currently, the cheapest two-seat electric cars from Chinese brands cost nearly 50 million, while Thai cars cost about 75 - 200 million VND (not including import costs)...

This is the car model that the school bought components for students to assemble.

Automotive Engineering Technology is one of 42 undergraduate majors that Nam Can Tho University is training. This school currently has about 24,000 students.

According to Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Chairman of the Council, the school is promoting international cooperation and linkages with prestigious schools and research institutes in the US, Japan, Korea, etc. to exchange scientific documents and coordinate the implementation of common research topics.

The electric car model that the school's students successfully built has also attracted the attention of many institutes and schools...

"This vehicle is feasible for use in a small area for transporting goods or for some other private purpose. But to run on the street, it must certainly meet the conditions of production, assembly, and vehicle technical safety.

Scientific research by students and teachers is the basic foundation. To be able to raise the level of commercialization is a very long step, requiring more investment from businesses," Associate Professor Dr. Ly Hung Anh, member of the ASEAN NCAP Technical Council, commented.

According to current regulations, electric vehicles must be equipped with a journey monitoring device and the driver must have a corresponding driving license.

Manufacturers must design, register and inspect, operate and participate in traffic according to the Road Traffic Law.

For vehicles produced by Can Tho University, if they want to be sold on the market, they must be registered at the Intellectual Property Office (Ministry of Science and Technology) and the Vietnam Register must certify the model as a normal motor vehicle.
