More than 30,000 blind people need corneal transplant surgery

On January 5, in Ninh Binh, the Ministry of Health and the Central Eye Hospital coordinated with the Ninh Binh Provincial People's Committee to organize a ceremony to honor people who donated corneas to medicine.

According to the representative of the Central Eye Hospital, in 2007, since Vietnam had the first person in Kim Son district, Ninh Binh voluntarily donate corneas after death, it has opened up opportunities for many blind people to regain their sight. From the bright spot of the cornea donation movement in Kim Son, people from other localities responded and spread nationwide.

To date, the country has had over 45,000 cornea donation registrations, of which 963 people have donated their corneas after death in 20 provinces and cities. Of which, Ninh Binh alone has 437 donors and Kim Son district is the leading locality with 427 donors.

At the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan stated that this is a great contribution of Kim Son people in particular and Ninh Binh province in general to the cause of public health care. Thanks to this source of donated corneas, many people have received corneal transplants and returned to normal working and living lives.

"If there were more donors nationwide, surely many people would have seen light, joy and happiness coming to many of our families. Thank you all for your contributions to bring health, light and joy to the sick," Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan emphasized and asked authorities at all levels to continue to support and create favorable conditions for this humanitarian activity to become a regular activity.

On this occasion, 4 groups and 5 families with outstanding cornea donors were awarded Certificates of Merit by the Minister of Health.

Currently, corneal transplant surgery is the only method in the world that can restore sight to people who are blind due to corneal disease. It is estimated that Vietnam currently has over 30,000 people who are blind due to corneal disease and need corneal transplant surgery to regain their sight. At the Central Eye Hospital, the list of people waiting for corneal transplants is nearly 1,000 people, and this number is increasing over time.
