More than 10 years of discipline

Like the Mong people across the country, the Mong people of Yen Bai often celebrate their traditional New Year at the end of December. The celebration of the New Year often lasts for a whole month, affecting crops and wasting money.

Faced with the waste of both material and time, since the end of 2012, Yen Bai province has had a policy of encouraging Mong people to celebrate Lunar New Year with other ethnic groups.

By 2014, 100% of Mong ethnic households in the province celebrated Tet together with other ethnic groups across the country.

Promoting that tradition, Yen Bai is now the first and only province in the country to implement the policy of encouraging Mong people to celebrate the traditional New Year together.

Mong people in Mu Cang Chai, Yen Bai, hang flags and celebrate Tet together.

For more than 10 years, Mr. Mua A Sang in Lao Chai commune, Mu Cang Chai district has been celebrating the Lunar New Year with his people.

Realizing the good, the good, and the practical benefits of celebrating Tet together, in the first years of implementing the campaign, Mr. Mua A Sang, together with the locality, went to each house to propagate and mobilize people to do it together.

Not celebrating Mong New Year but only celebrating Lunar New Year has helped Mong people have time to produce; children do not have to take long days off from school; have the opportunity to participate in and enjoy cultural, artistic and sports activities with other ethnic groups; at the same time, promote the cultural quintessence of their own people.

Mr. Mua A Sang, Hong Nhi Pa Village, Lao Chai Commune, Mu Cang Chai District, Yen Bai Province said: "Before the Mong custom, we celebrated Tet a month in advance. If we celebrated Tet a month in advance, the children would have to take a day off from school. After the second Tet, we had to take another day off, which felt unstable.

But then, with the help of the Party, State, and government, we celebrated Tet together, and our children also had a stable holiday so as not to waste time, and the family had time to work in the fields and stabilize their lives."

Hong Nhi Pa resettlement village with Mr. Sinh's house has more than ten households, they all moved here after the flood swept through the village.

Since the implementation of Yen Bai province's policy of encouraging Mong people to celebrate the Lunar New Year together, the practical benefits that this movement brings have been shown.

Students' learning is guaranteed and also convenient for production, increasing the spirit of national solidarity.

The Mong people here have switched to celebrating Tet together, and since then many bad customs have been eliminated; production and economy are focused on, and life has changed a lot compared to before.

Ms. Giang Thi Cau, Hong Nhi Pa Village, Lao Chai Commune, Mu Cang Chai District, shared: "Before, my family was a poor household in the locality, but since we celebrated Tet together, we had time to grow corn and rice, so our life gradually stabilized and now we have escaped poverty. I feel very happy."

Eat together during Tet to save money

In reality, when starting to mobilize, the biggest difficulty that the locality encountered was the negative reaction of many of the local people. They still had a mentality of being afraid of change and were afraid of losing their traditional customs.

But with a scientific approach and with the motto of Focusing on mobilizing, absolutely no coercion, taking appeal, mobilization, and persuasion as the most important. At the same time, encourage, support, and help places with financial difficulties to organize cultural, artistic, and sports activities to welcome Spring.

Therefore, the change of "eating Tet together" of the Mong people is now supported by the Mong people and considered as their traditional Tet. During Tet, they also perform all the traditional procedures like the Mong people's Tet.

Mr. Thao A Chinh, a resident of Tram Tau commune, Tram Tau district, Yen Bai province, said: "Previously, when the Mong people celebrated Tet early, the Tet holiday lasted nearly 2 months, so people could not organize production, and every time the crop was close, they were hungry.

Now the province is encouraging the Mong people to celebrate Tet together, both happily and economically, because right after Tet, people focus on production, harvesting a lot of rice, corn, and agricultural by-products to raise more pigs and chickens.

In addition, people also clearly see the benefits of celebrating Tet together without being rushed and having more time to shop, embroider, sew beautiful clothes, prepare pigs and chickens; and have time to produce spring rice in the right season.

Especially on Tet holiday, children who go to school or work far away are all able to come home and reunite; the customs and practices of ancestor worship and welcoming the new year are still preserved, so they are very enthusiastic in responding.

Every Tet holiday, people are busy cleaning their houses, preparing food to make sticky rice cakes and offering trays.

Mr. Giang A Vu, Standing Deputy Secretary of Mu Cang Chai District Party Committee, Yen Bai province said: "In the past, some people were concerned about whether sharing the same Tet would destroy the Mong ethnic identity, but I affirm that it does not.

The only difference is whether you eat before or after, the procedures still take place normally and also ensure that customs and traditions are maintained.

Nowadays, no one has the idea of going back or thinking about the Mong people's Tet like before, and I think this is a very big campaign that has achieved very good results."

The spring air is bustling with a unique fragrance when the To Day flowers have decorated the entire Northwest mountainous region.

Sharing the joy of celebrating Lunar New Year with people across the country, the Mong people have now changed their way of thinking and doing things to move towards a more prosperous, rich and civilized life.
