Heroic memories The historic victory of the autumn of 1954 was made possible by the contributions of many soldiers of the Capital and thousands of soldiers, militia, guerrillas, and workers of factories and enterprises in Hanoi. Among those who made the victory 70 years ago was veteran Le Van Tinh, from Khuong Mai ward (Thanh Xuan district), who was then a liaison officer of Company 238, Capital Regiment, Division 308 (Pioneer Division). Veteran Le Van Tinh recalled: “At 5:00 a.m. on October 10, 1954, we left Phung village (Dan Phuong district) in an orderly formation, following Highway 32 to Hanoi. Passing Cau Dien, a forest of flags, banners, and slogans appeared. We were very moved to see people standing on both sides of the road waving flags and flowers to welcome the marching troops. Their eyes were wet with tears, their arms were outstretched as if they wanted to hug their long-lost relatives...”. “In the early days, we went into each house in groups of three to visit, talk, and answer questions for the people. At night, we organized music and dance performances in public places and flower gardens, and the people responded enthusiastically,” veteran Le Van Tinh added. This year, veteran Duong Niet, Khuong Mai ward (Thanh Xuan district) has turned 91 years old, but the memories of the days when he and his comrades from Battalion 18, Capital Regiment, Division 308 advanced to liberate the capital are still deeply imprinted in his mind. Mr. Niet recalled: On October 8, 1954, Battalion 18, under the name of a guard unit, was the first Army unit to enter Hanoi and take over 35 important positions occupied by the French army. On October 9, 1954, the French army began to withdraw from Hanoi. Wherever the French army withdrew, our army took over. Soldier Duong Niet was the team leader, along with 4 soldiers ordered to take over the North Vietnam Police Department. The team's mission was to limit the French army from destroying our infrastructure. In the "troops marching to the Capital that autumn" there was also veteran, wounded soldier Nguyen Minh Thang, former officer of Regiment 88, Division 308. "At 4:00 a.m. on October 10, 1954, our whole unit woke up to pack up military equipment, ready for the big day. At around 9:00 a.m., 4 troops from the city gates entered the city, my unit went in the direction of Cau Den gate, took over Don Thuy Hospital (now the 108th Central Military Hospital), took over the paratrooper camp, the Institute of Microbiology (now the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology). During the days of taking over the Capital, we not only performed the task of protection, but also carried out mass mobilization work, helping the people better understand our new regime. Gratitude, honoring those who made the victory

70 years have passed, the soldiers who took over the capital in the past, now over 90 years old, still cannot help but feel moved every time they recall the heroic historical moment of the beloved capital. The thunderous marching steps on the ancient streets of Hanoi carry the pride of the whole nation, of the long and arduous years of resistance. The streets are filled with flags and flowers, waving arms, and bright smiles of the people of the capital welcoming the victorious army back... Imbued with the national morality of "remembering the source of water when drinking" and "repaying gratitude", on the occasion of the great 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital, the Party Committees and authorities at all levels of Hanoi have been organizing many gratitude activities. The leaders of the City Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and local leaders organized many delegations to visit, present gifts and encourage veterans, former people's police officers, former youth volunteers and families with meritorious services, and people who directly participated in the liberation of the capital during the resistance war against French colonialism in the city. In particular, the meeting to express gratitude to Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, Heroes of the People's Armed Forces, veteran revolutionary cadres and more than 280 veterans, former people's police officers, former youth volunteers, families with meritorious services, on behalf of tens of thousands of veterans, former people's police officers, former youth volunteers - those who made the great stature and historical value of the 70 years of the Liberation of the Capital organized by the City Party Committee - People's Council - People's Committee - Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee today (October 3) further affirmed that gratitude and boundless gratitude. At the meeting, the delegates and the city leaders reviewed the proud tradition of the past 70 years; an opportunity to show gratitude and honor those who made the victory. On this occasion, through the sharing of historical witnesses, the youth of the capital will deeply remember the truth: To have a beautiful life like today, previous generations have gone through many difficulties, hardships, and sacrificed themselves to gain independence and freedom. The young generation should always remember the advice of beloved Uncle Ho: "Whether Vietnam's mountains and rivers become beautiful or not, whether the Vietnamese people can step up to the stage of glory to stand shoulder to shoulder with the world powers or not, depends largely on your studies", so that you will know how to appreciate, cherish and strive to study, work, contribute, and be determined to maintain the independence and sovereignty of the Fatherland, to build your homeland and country to be more and more prosperous and happy. Hanoi has now changed day by day, becoming more modern, more civilized, and people's lives are increasingly prosperous and happy. The foundation for Hanoi to develop as it is today is the spirit of solidarity, the indomitable will to never retreat in the face of difficulties of generations of cadres, soldiers and people of the capital Hanoi and the whole country; in which, there are great contributions from those who have contributed their efforts and sacrificed their lives to liberate the capital.
