Elderly people have a spirit of lifelong learning
On July 7, Can Tho University held the opening ceremony for the 2024 postgraduate program. Among the hundreds of students present in the hall, Mr. Nguyen Tan Thanh attracted attention with his small figure and silver hair.

For him, today is a very happy day, because he has begun to conquer his dream of a master's degree after more than 50 years of nurturing it. His children and grandchildren also share his joy. More specially, he is the only person to receive a full scholarship from Can Tho University. Mr. Thanh was admitted to the master's degree in Vietnamese literature at Can Tho University. He is known as a writer, literary theorist and fluent in many foreign languages. Passing the exam at the age of 87 on May 25, he has made many people admire him. Interestingly, in the list of 10 students in the same class as Mr. Thanh, there are 2 candidates who are 65 years younger than him.

Associate Professor, Dr. Mai Van Nam, Head of the Graduate School, Can Tho University, said that Mr. Thanh received the scholarship "Elderly people with lifelong learning spirit" for the 2024-2025 school year (24 million VND/year). Initially, the school will grant it for 1 year, and next year, if he has good academic performance, it will continue to be considered. This is a gift to encourage his spirit of overcoming difficulties and studying hard.
Love words, never thought of giving up
In front of hundreds of students, Mr. Thanh was led to the podium by school officials. His hands were shaking with excitement and emotion, he said that he came from a poor working-class family but was "passionate about learning". Regarding studying, he has never thought of giving up and believes that if you go slowly but reach the destination, it is still meaningful. He is very excited to still have enough health to fulfill his dream and to be taken care of by the school. Another happy thing is that many people look at him and think of the message that studying is a lifelong career, a bright path with no end.

Mr. Thanh confided: "I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Can Tho University for me - an elderly student who was lucky enough to pass the exam and receive a valuable scholarship from the school. I will be determined to repay this spiritual debt with great efforts in studying." Very special is Mr. Thanh. He was a former student of the school in the early years of its establishment. His decision to return to school to study for a master's degree has many meanings, partly reflecting the development and training quality of the school that is constantly improving.

She thought the school had typed the wrong information about the candidate's date of birth, because she didn't think someone so old would go to study for a master's degree. "The press published the news and I believed it was true. I was very surprised at that time, I really admired his studious spirit. Maybe when I study with him, I will learn many good things. The school's scholarship to the old man is very worthy, because he is a very positive inspiration for young people," Ms. Tu shared.
