Is psychology just theory?

Having practiced in class at different levels, Tham Quyen, a fourth-year student majoring in psychology at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, said she was very interested in the specialized lessons. "We had group discussions, wrote, drew, role-played experiences, and analyzed ourselves," Quyen said.

Cam Tu, a second-year student majoring in psychology at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, shared that the training program includes internships and practicums. There are two parts to the internship: in the first internship, students can actively find the facility they want to visit, either individually or in groups. In the second internship, students go with the course and are accompanied and guided by teachers in a province outside of Ho Chi Minh City.

Psychology major is stepping up its practical training for students.

With the orientation of developing in the field of clinical psychology of children and adolescents, Tuong Vi, a second-year student majoring in psychology at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, is preparing documents to do internships at facilities and centers in Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Tuong Vi, some people believe that psychology is only learned through books, while others think that this is a field of guessing other people's thoughts or that it is difficult to find a job. However, career opportunities for psychology students today are very open because of its high applicability in many areas of life. "Psychology is not an easy field to pursue, not only to study to support the mental health of the community but also to understand and explore oneself," said Tuong Vi.

A turning point in training

Master Nguyen Thi Ngoc Vui, lecturer at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, said that psychology is developing but it is necessary to admit that this is a new field in Vietnam and is undergoing a transformation in universities training in psychology, creating conditions for businesses to enter schools and for students to practice in society to improve their skills.

"The school also has subjects that equip students with skills such as personal projects and critical thinking. Every year, the school conducts a survey of employers' opinions. Based on that data, the school will change the training framework, goals, and output standards to respond promptly. Lecturers also enhance their expertise and bring technology into teaching," Ms. Vui shared.

Ms. Vui informed that currently, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City has 3 majors: therapeutic counseling psychology, organizational and human resource psychology and religious psychology. "For the therapeutic counseling major, students will go to psychological counseling rooms to experience and observe... For the organizational and human resource psychology major, you will go to the human resource department of the enterprise, do research on policies, working regimes, and training management to make them suitable and effective", the master shared.

Master Vui also commented that the psychology industry is developing in Vietnam, requiring high professional practice, and social demand is expected to increase sharply.

Working in human resources is a recent trend among psychology students.

Regarding the labor market, Ms. Ly Ngoc Tran, Director of Outsourcing Human Resources Services, Talentnet Corporation, said that currently, businesses are gradually following the form of skill-based recruitment, selecting candidates with skills suitable for the job, instead of only valuing degrees, experience or professional knowledge. The human resources industry is no exception to that trend.

"Psychology students have many skills that are quite suitable for the human resources industry such as empathy, communication, flexible thinking, situation handling, etc. This is a very good stepping stone for you to enter the human resources management profession. Graduates can try their hand in many "fields" in the human resources industry, maybe starting in the recruitment or employee engagement department. These are departments that use a lot of communication skills, require sensitivity to "read" candidates, empathize with employees, and promote the skills and knowledge that psychology students have been equipped with in school", Ms. Ngoc Tran shared.

According to Ms. Ngoc Tran, as a place to train and provide high-quality human resources for the labor market, universities should equip students with additional skills such as resilience to change, acumen, and data analysis skills.

"Schools should also expand extracurricular activities, connect with businesses, and build internship programs so that students can proactively hone new skills and thinking in a practical environment. Today's students are very confident, dynamic, and eager to experience, but they lack the patience to learn and invest deeply in a field. This is also something you need to improve," Ms. Tran advised.

Wide open job opportunities

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Vui, lecturer at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, said that survey data from the school showed that psychology graduates often work as counselors, therapists, and human resource managers. In addition, schools are also investing in school psychology.

According to statistics from the Center for Human Resource Demand Forecasting and Labor Market Information of Ho Chi Minh City, the city currently needs more than 1,000 personnel with expertise in psychology each year.

The psychology industry is also growing strongly around the world. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that jobs for school and career counselors will grow by 8%, and human resources professionals are expected to grow by 5% through 2028.

Psychology students can become psychotherapists in hospitals and clinics; teach and research psychology in universities , colleges and research institutes; public relations specialists, customer care; market research analysts; advertising; marketing...
