The two candidates of the first year of the Dream Wings scholarship program will further demonstrate that hardship and poverty can never be an obstacle to their progress.

I dream of becoming an entrepreneur, so I try my best to study well so that I can go to university. Although my family is not sure if they can afford the tuition, I still try my best every day for the future ahead.

HUYNH VAN THANH

Incomplete family

Huynh Van Thanh, a student in class 11A2 at Luong Dinh Cua High School (Can Tho City), lost his mother when he was less than 2 years old. Thanh's hometown is in Kien Giang. With no mother left, his aunt (father's sister) took him to Can Tho to raise him. His father also left the country to work far away, occasionally coming back to visit but could not provide any support.

When she was adopted, Thanh was too young to have any information about his mother and maternal side since then. Thanh had a husband and two daughters. The family's economy depended on just over a hectare of garden, so both daughters dropped out of school after finishing middle school. She collected scrap metal to earn extra income. Thanh grew up under the care of his aunt and uncle, whom his friends still called parents, and two older sisters.

It was not until her two older sisters found jobs in Ho Chi Minh City through an acquaintance that the family became more stable. But when Thanh was in 7th grade, her uncle got cancer, his health gradually declined and he was no longer able to work. She alone had to take care of the housework and take care of her seriously ill husband.

Thanh once thought of dropping out of school to ease the burden on his aunt because he found life too difficult. But when he calmed down, he realized that only by studying and gaining knowledge could he hope to have a less difficult life like his aunt, uncle, and two sisters. It was also because he wanted to be stable in the future and be able to take care of the people who raised him.

His uncle also passed away a few months ago, after a long battle with illness. The small house now only has Thanh and his aunt to rely on each other. After school, he always comes home to help his aunt with the gardening and housework. For many years, Thanh was an excellent student and also tutored weak students in class.

The harder the harder

If you go to Kien Tuong High School (Kien Tuong town, Long An province) and ask around, you will almost certainly know Pham Minh Trong - a student of class 10T1 of the school. Because his family situation makes anyone who hears about it feel sorry.

Trong's father - Mr. Pham Hoang Phuc - has stage 3 rectal cancer. Despite his poor health, he is still working as a security guard for a company in the Hoang Gia Industrial Park (My Hanh Nam Commune, Duc Hoa District, Long An Province).

With the small monthly salary from his security job, he only dared to buy herbal medicine to get by, and saved the rest to send home to support his children's education.

Trong and his mother are living in a rented room in Quarter 5, Ward 1, Kien Tuong Town (Long An) with a monthly rent of 700,000 VND. Mrs. Bui Thi Van (Trong's mother) is not doing any better as she has a severe ear infection that makes her unable to hear clearly and is often tormented by pain. Living by selling lottery tickets, it is better if they are lucky enough to sell all the tickets, but if they do not sell out, the whole family will have a hard time.

The awareness of his family's difficulties further motivated him to overcome adversity and study hard. The proof is that Trong has been an excellent student for 10 consecutive years. His classmates always saw Trong as optimistic, sociable, and actively participating in movement activities, never feeling self-conscious about his difficult circumstances.

Impressed by Trong's spirit and determination, teachers and friends often care and encourage him. And Minh Trong is still an example in the story shared with other friends.

Lighting up the faith for students to overcome difficulties

Coincidentally, both the Youth Unions of the schools where Pham Minh Trong and Huynh Van Thanh are studying decided to recommend them to the Wings of Dreams scholarship program. Also because of their spirit and determination to overcome difficulties, the representatives of the Youth Unions of the two schools said "it is very worthy to introduce and wish to spread the story of this example of determination to many other young people".

The school hopes that both of you will be awarded scholarships. This is not only a material thing to help each of you overcome the current difficulties, but also a light of faith for many students who overcome difficulties to study well in society. Because we have the same commitment to build a better and more developed society and no one is left behind.
