(Dan Tri) - More than half a billion VND in Green Kite scholarships were awarded to 210 students with special circumstances in Thai Nguyen province in 2024.
Nguyen Thi Mai (born 2011) - class 8H, Hong Tien Secondary School, Pho Yen city, Thai Nguyen province - is one of the students receiving the Green Kite scholarship this year.
When Mai was in elementary school, her father passed away from liver cancer. Three years and eight months later, Mai's mother also fell seriously ill and passed away. Mai and her younger sister became orphans, living with their grandmother who was over 80 years old.
To treat Mai’s father’s illness, the grandmother sold all the valuable assets in the house. To raise her two orphaned grandchildren, she raised pigs and chickens, and farmed, despite her deteriorating health.
Unlike Mai, Hoang Ngoc Nhi (born in 2013) - class 6A, Yen Trach Secondary School, Phu Luong District, Thai Nguyen Province - still has both parents but still lives in poverty. Nhi's parents divorced, her father remarried and had 3 more children. Nhi and her siblings live with their father's new family.

Due to difficult circumstances, Nhi’s brother had to drop out of school after finishing 9th grade. Every day, Nhi wakes up at 5am, does personal hygiene, does housework, then cycles to school, which is nearly 10km away from home. She usually cycles for 1 hour.
In the afternoon, the 11-year-old girl takes care of her 1-year-old sibling, does housework and studies.
Nhi's wish is to go to school and not have to drop out of school early like her brother. Every year she tries her best to achieve the title of excellent student.
Coming from Tan Long Ethnic Boarding Secondary School, Dong Hy District, Thai Nguyen Province, Ly Thi Mai Huong (born 2013) - a H'mong ethnic - has to travel a distance of 20km to get to school.
Although her house was far away and her family was one of the poor households in the area, Huong was still determined to pursue her studies. There were weekends when her parents did not come to pick her up from school, so Huong walked 3 hours on the hilly road to get home. The 20km walk never discouraged Huong.
Mai, Nhi, and Huong are three of 210 disadvantaged students from nine districts and three cities in Thai Nguyen province who received support from the Green Kite scholarship program initiated by SEVT - a member of Samsung Vietnam Group - since 2015.
Prof. Dr. Dang Kim Vui - former Director of Thai Nguyen University - commented that the Green Kite Scholarship since its inception has made a significant contribution to the education of Thai Nguyen province.

"Scholarships truly support and empower poor students to go to school. On the challenging journey to reach their dreams and ambitions, scholarships have given them more strength to firmly step on the path to the future," said Professor Dang Kim Vui.
This year, the total amount awarded by the Green Kite Scholarship program is 552 million VND.
Speaking at the 2024 Green Kite Scholarship Award Ceremony, Permanent Vice Chairman of Thai Nguyen Provincial People's Committee Dang Xuan Truong highly appreciated the contributions and support of the units to the province's education sector.
Mr. Truong expressed his hope that businesses will continue to implement production and business development programs associated with social responsibility, contributing to making Thai Nguyen a modern industrial economic center of the Northern midland and mountainous region and the Hanoi capital region by 2030.
"For the students honored to receive scholarships today, I hope you will continue to strive and try harder, turning difficulties in life into motivation to develop yourself comprehensively in terms of intelligence, morality and skills.
I believe that with the companionship of family, teachers and the support of businesses and the whole society, you will achieve your dreams," Mr. Dang Xuan Truong sent a message to the students.
