After much effort, by 2024, Hanoi had resolved 13/33 traffic jam black spots. However, there is a risk of 16 new traffic jam spots arising in the capital.
New congestion points and routes continuously arise.
When talking about traffic jams in Hanoi, many people immediately mention the Nguyen Trai - Nga Tu So - Truong Chinh route. During rush hour, at Nga Tu So, cars and motorbikes line up hundreds of meters long waiting to get on the overpass.
Nguyen Trai Street is often congested during rush hour.
In addition, the flow of vehicles from Vu Trong Phung and Nguyen Tuan streets continuously intersects with cars and motorbikes on Nguyen Trai street, causing traffic chaos.
According to Giao thong Newspaper reporters, in the last days of the year, on Tran Duy Hung - Nguyen Chi Thanh street, although the median strip has been cut and the roadway has been widened, the roadway and sidewalks are still packed.
Ms. Nguyen Thuy Quynh (Ha Dong, Hanoi) often travels here to go to work and said in frustration: "From Thang Long Boulevard to Nguyen Chi Thanh, I constantly have to move in traffic jams, very tiring. In the afternoon, I often have to ask to go home early or stay at work until late."
According to a report by the Hanoi Department of Transport, the city had 33 traffic jams during rush hour in early 2024. During the year, Hanoi made efforts to resolve 13/33 of these.
Among these, there are famous black spots such as Nguyen Trai Street area next to Thanh Xuan underpass towards Nguyen Xien; Le Duc Tho - Ham Nghi - Nguyen Hoang intersection; Mai Dich overpass intersection; Doc Thuy Linh - Nguyen Khoi embankment intersection; Au Co - Tu Lien intersection; Au Co - Xuan Dieu intersection...
However, currently, there is a risk of 16 more traffic jams arising in the area, bringing the total to 36, with the route congested during rush hour. These include: Co Linh - Dam Quang Trung intersection; Roundabout area on Cuong Kien street; on Tran Nhat Duat street (Chuong Duong Do border gate); Tran Phu - Thanh Binh - Phung Hung intersection (Trang bridge); Phung Hung - Cau Buu intersection - 19/5 street (Den bridge)...
Personal vehicles increase infrastructure capacity 10 times
Mr. Tran Huu Bao, Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Transport, said that the main cause of traffic congestion is that the transport infrastructure system has not been fully invested in according to the plan.

While the growth rate of personal vehicles is more than 10 times higher than the growth rate of transport infrastructure. The high population density in the inner city means that the volume of personal vehicles is increasing, especially during rush hour.
In addition, the application of smart traffic in traffic management and operation to optimize existing traffic infrastructure still has many limitations and there is no comprehensive, long-term solution.
People's awareness of obeying the law when participating in traffic is not high, they do not strictly comply with legal regulations on traffic safety and order.
Promote public transport, build more overpasses
Mr. Bao also said that in the long term, the city will promote the implementation of many groups of solutions, including developing public passenger transport and investing in infrastructure.
Recently, the Hanoi Department of Transport proposed to build 5 steel-structured overpasses to solve traffic congestion and increase traffic connectivity. These bridges will be built at the intersections of Chau Van Liem - Le Quang Dao (Nam Tu Liem district); Co Linh - Thach Ban (Long Bien district); Hoang Minh Giam - Nguyen Tuan (Thanh Xuan district); Co Bi - Ngo Xuan Quang (Gia Lam district); Nguyen Huy Nhuan - Ly Thanh Tong (Gia Lam district).
At the same time, the city continues to review and research routes that are eligible for vehicle lane separation; Coordinate the application of science and technology in research and survey of traffic situations on a number of routes and intersections at risk of traffic congestion to serve as a basis for consulting, proposing and providing appropriate solutions for investment in traffic infrastructure.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, a traffic expert, said that the main cause of traffic congestion in Hanoi is unreasonable planning. Therefore, a systematic solution is to review and rationalize the city's planning. When there is a quality plan, there needs to be a mechanism to monitor, manage, and implement the plan well.
"Currently, traffic planning is still aiming to serve motor vehicles. That is wrong because the ultimate goal is to serve people's movement, not to serve vehicles," Ms. Thuy said.
The latest statistics on vehicle counting in the area show that the number of vehicles traveling on Nguyen Trai Street is 2.5-3.2 times higher than designed.
This figure on Khuat Duy Tien - Nguyen Xien street is 4.3-4.9 times higher; on Le Van Luong street it is 2.7-3.3 times higher; on Xuan Thuy - Cau Giay street it is 2.1-2.6 times higher; on Lang street it is 1.2-1.8 times higher...
