In his latest sharing, coach Philippe Troussier assessed that the Vietnamese team needs players with qualities like Nguyen Hoang Duc or Bui Hoang Viet Anh to participate in the World Cup.
" If we have 20 players like Hoang Duc or 20 players like Viet Anh, the Vietnamese team can absolutely attend the World Cup ," said Mr. Troussier.
The French coach highly appreciated the skills of his two students. He said that these are the two best players in Vietnam at present. The rest have good qualities but are not as comprehensive as Hoang Duc and Viet Anh.
" I think a strong team needs good individuals. Players need to meet the criteria of physique, technique, experience and football thinking. In the Vietnamese team, there are only 2 people who meet all of the above factors: Viet Anh and Hoang Duc. I think they are capable of playing at the top level in Europe. But unfortunately, we no longer have anyone at that level ," said Mr. Troussier.
" There are players with good football skills like Phan Tuan Tai, Nguyen Thai Son or Nguyen Dinh Bac but they are too small and lack experience playing football. On the other hand, Indonesia has 20 top-class players ."
On March 26, Coach Philippe Troussier and the Vietnam Football Federation reached an agreement to terminate his contract. He did not ask for compensation but only received 3 months of salary support from the federation.
The strategist ended more than a year in charge of the Vietnamese teams. He signed a contract with the VFF until mid-2026, with the goal of bringing Vietnamese football to the World Cup. However, this goal was considered closed after two consecutive losses to Indonesia last March.
In addition to the World Cup goal, Mr. Troussier also failed to help the Vietnamese team pass the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup. In addition, the team fell out of the world's top 100 for the first time in more than 5 years.
Mr. Trousier said that he and the VFF also set bigger goals instead of the initial achievements. He said: " When taking over the team, we set a goal to reach even greater heights than now, which is to become a top 10 team in Asia or enter the top 80 in the world ."
Mr. Troussier believes that to achieve that goal, he needs more time and Vietnamese football also needs patience. The former coach of the Japanese team believes that the Vietnamese team must endure failures and mistakes to achieve success.
" To do that, we need new people, new playing styles and new methods. There will be a transition period and we have to accept that Vietnamese football is in that period. The price to pay for change is mistakes in matches against Iraq or Indonesia.
But, if we can overcome those mistakes, I believe the Vietnamese team will achieve better results than we did in the past. Sometimes, to reach success, we have to accept taking one step back to take two steps forward. Most importantly, we must not let the current difficult situation shift our long-term goals ," Mr. Troussier shared.
