Just three days after Japan lost 2-1 to Iran in the quarter-finals (February 3), reporter Shuichi Tamura called to interview coach Troussier. According to Bunshun , the coach of the Vietnamese team was on a short vacation at his home in Morocco at the time, but he spent more than 60 minutes to talk about his views.
He was frank when talking about the reasons for the Japanese team's failure: "There are two strategies in the matches. One is to rely on the individual abilities of the players, they will play separate roles in the matches. Each person is assigned a position, but the purpose is to let the players express themselves. The second strategy is to require the players to follow the collective style of play. It is an organized work that includes smooth coordination of both attack and defense.
Coach Moriyasu (Japan) and Klinsmann (former coach of the Korean national team) often rely heavily on the first strategy. At the 2023 Asian Cup, both coaches Moriyasu and Klinsmann neglected the second strategy. This is because Japan and Korea are considered to be too strong in Asia. They are somewhat subjective because they have many excellent players and find it difficult to ask these stars to sacrifice for the team. Therefore, when the first strategy fails, meaning the stars cannot speak up when the team is in a deadlock, it will lead to failure.

Coach Troussier said the Japanese team failed because they relied too much on individual brilliance.
Mr. Troussier also surprisingly talked about the Vietnamese team as an example: “For me, a strategy based on individual ability is not enough. If a team is good enough, the ratio between the two strategies I mentioned above is 50 - 50. However, in the Vietnamese team, I rate it as 80% collective play and 20% individual ability to shine. The reason is that Vietnamese players are at a lower level than those in Japan and Korea due to lack of ability, experience and physical strength. Therefore, I am forced to implement a collective strategy and require the players to also act for the common goal .”
Coach Troussier always requires the players to play with a collective spirit.
In the opening match of the 2023 Asian Cup group stage, the Vietnamese team brought many surprises to Japan. Coach Troussier revealed the reason: “The difference between the two teams is the motivation to compete. If there is no conflict in the team, there will be motivation, there will be competition. The best players in the team will compete with 100% of their ability.
Especially, in a strong team like Japan, creating motivation is very necessary. When playing against Vietnam, will the Japanese players really give 100% of their strength in the match? As for the Vietnamese team, the performance in the first match answered the same question.
Coach Troussier believes that motivation is the difference between the Vietnamese and Japanese teams.
At the end of his interview with Bunshun , Coach Troussier reiterated his three criteria for each match: “Once again, I still say that the 11 players on the field must create a collective, unified style of play. There are three criteria for solving a match. The first criterion is that each player needs to clearly understand how he should play. That is the ability to read the game and know what situation the team is in. The second criterion is to be decisive and decisive. This criterion is related to things like: where to pass the ball, where to look, how to make a cross! And the third and most important criterion is the ability to play the ball accurately.”
