Hanoi After four months away from football, Coach Nguyen Duc Thang returned, accepting to lead his old club The Cong.

Coach Nguyen Duc Thang will lead The Cong until the end of the 2023-2024 season, and will have his contract extended if he helps the team achieve good results. He is expected to be introduced on January 8, when the team returns after the break. Interim coach Thomas Dooley returns as Technical Director.

Duc Thang was a former player of The Cong from 1995 to 2005, winning the national championship in 1998 and the national Super Cup in 1999. After that, he stayed at the club as a youth coach for a while, before moving to lead the Hanoi T&T youth team (now Hanoi FC) in 2014. The Hanoi B team under Mr. Thang won the First Division in 2015 and then changed its name to Saigon FC (now dissolved), moving to Ho Chi Minh City.

The 1976-born coach led Saigon FC in the V-League 2016 and 2017, then moved to Thanh Hoa in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, Mr. Thang led Binh Dinh to win the First Division championship to be promoted and received a lot of investment to upgrade the squad. In the next three seasons, Binh Dinh's best achievement was winning the bronze medal of the V-League 2022 and being runner-up in the National Cup 2022. When the V-League 2023 ended in August, Mr. Thang decided to leave the club to rest for four months, then accepted to lead The Cong.

Coach Duc Thang took office when The Cong were not playing well, only winning eight points after eight rounds and currently ranked 11th in the 2023-2024 V-League. After losing 0-2 to Hanoi FC in round six, The Cong parted ways with coach Thach Bao Khanh - who was also a former player of the team, and then appointed Technical Director Thomas Dooley as interim manager. However, the former coach of the Philippines national team could not stop the decline, and The Cong lost 1-4 to Binh Dinh and 0-3 to Nam Dinh.

Mr. Duc Thang will have about a month to prepare before The Cong hosts Khanh Hoa in round 9 of the V-League, on February 17. In the immediate future, when The Cong resumes training on January 8, the team will be without defenders Nguyen Thanh Binh, Phan Tuan Tai, midfielders Khuat Van Khang and Truong Tien Anh - who are currently training with the Vietnamese team for the 2023 Asian Cup. Three midfielders Jaha, Hoang Duc and Duc Chien are also absent due to injury, expected to return in early February.
