With innovation tied to global technology trends, the gaming industry has taken a new step forward, promising to bring value to the economy.
The Ministry of Information and Communications aims for the Vietnamese gaming industry to reach a revenue milestone of 1 billion USD by 2030.
To achieve this result, according to many experts, it is necessary to build a good foundation in parallel with the right policies; promote international connections so that foreign businesses and investors see Vietnam as a potential market.
Many potentials and advantages for development
Data from market research firm Newzoo shows that Southeast Asia is the region with the second highest growth rate of mobile games in the world, averaging about 7.4% per year in the period 2022-2025. Game industry revenue has jumped from 2.4 billion USD in 2019 to more than 5.3 billion USD in 2023.
The Vietnamese gaming industry has made great strides, with 54.6 million gamers, revenue in 2023 is 507 million USD, in which the eSports-related gaming segment has achieved many high achievements.
Mr. Phung Viet Thang, Director of Business, Marketing and Communications Group, Intel Corporation in the Vietnamese market, commented: Recently, Vietnamese games have achieved many impressive milestones. The gaming and e-sports fields possess remarkable potential.
Esports in Vietnam has also made impressive strides. Over the past ten years, Vietnamese Esports teams have expanded beyond Southeast Asia to compete with other top teams around the world.
At the 31st SEA Games, the Vietnamese E-Sports Delegation won 4 Gold medals and 3 Silver medals.
With more than 18 million e-sports players, according to the Vietnam E-Sports White Book 2021, the Vietnamese e-sports industry possesses a potential platform for development.
The presence of Esports at the SEA Games also demonstrates the Government’s efforts to promote esports. Now, professional gamers and careers related to games and esports are becoming more and more popular in Vietnam.
Domestic e-sports tournaments from professional, semi-professional, to university levels are becoming more and more popular...
Assessing the potential, advantages and development opportunities of the Vietnamese gaming industry, Mr. Le Quang Tu Do, Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information (Ministry of Information and Communications) said: Gaming is an industry that contributes very well to the development of the country in the era of the 4.0 industrial revolution.

The Vietnamese gaming industry currently has two groups: the game production group and the game publishing group; in which, the game production group has great potential. Vietnam also has many programmers who are qualified to make games for the two largest stores, Google and Apple.
Statistics compiled by the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information show that about 50% of popular mobile games today originate from Vietnam - partially (outsourcing) or completely written.
Vietnamese people have a huge advantage in simple games, complex games (G1) are rare. For every 25 games uploaded to stores, one game is from Vietnam, this rate is much higher than other countries.
Thus, gaming is a smokeless industry that Vietnam has many advantages in developing, attracting foreign currency.
Barriers and obstacles
Despite many advantages and potentials, the Vietnamese gaming industry also faces difficulties.
Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information Le Quang Tu Do pointed out: Although the game industry in Vietnam is still developing in both quality and number of players, while Vietnamese people produce games for foreign countries, most of the games released in Vietnam are games from abroad.
Besides, in the context of the game industry gradually being recognized, the issue of human resource training is not receiving due attention.
According to Ms. Vu Minh Hanh, Chief of Office of the Vietnam Game Development Association, the reality is that training in game majors is still not popular and not many people know about it.
In 2023, the Academy of Posts and Telecommunications will have its first formal program on game design and training. Game development is facing many difficulties due to the lack of qualified personnel.
Game development staff in the past were mainly people who studied other fields, such as information technology, graphic design..., and had a passion for the game industry. Businesses had to spend a lot of time training them.
Due to this barrier, Vietnam cannot produce game products that reach international standards. This is a big disadvantage, because we have many conditions to develop but lack opportunities to advance.
In terms of revenue, although ranked 3rd in 2022 with 507 million USD from 54.6 million players, the scale of mobile game revenue in the Vietnamese market is still quite far behind Thailand - which achieved 763 million USD in revenue with 38.3 million players.

The gap will continue until 2025, and revenue in Vietnam will account for a modest proportion of total gaming industry revenue in Southeast Asia.
This is believed to stem from some different policies in the Vietnamese mobile gaming market compared to other Southeast Asian countries.
In Thailand, infrastructure plays an important role in the development of the gaming industry, along with the gaming industry association and the game programming community.
Thailand is also very interested in bringing culture into games to promote the national image. Ms. Pawitporn Jianprasert, Senior Director of Garena Online, said that introducing Thai culture into games is considered a strength and a secret to success.
Garena has launched many Thai-style games such as elephant clothes..., this creates a fun environment, attracting attention not only domestically, but also promoting the country's culture internationally.
In addition, there are two major game markets in the world that Vietnam can learn from, which are Korea and China.
In the early 2000s, Korea implemented a series of policies to support the gaming industry, creating a complete ecological circle, establishing the KeSPA Organization (Korea e-Sports Association) to focus on organizing $2.5 million gaming tournaments.
Thanks to that support, South Korea is considered a powerhouse in e-sports and has gained a lot of economic benefits in this field.
Meanwhile, China recognizes Esports as one of 1,900 professions with titles and many good job positions; at the same time, it opens many majors in Esports…
Forming industries that create value
With the goal of increasing the game industry's revenue to 1 billion USD in 5 years, Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information Le Quang Tu Do said: The Ministry of Information and Communications is building a Game Industry Development Strategy to submit to the Government for promulgation. This includes establishing a game alliance; changing prejudices so that society can see that the game industry contributes a lot to the country's socio-economic development; calling for investment funds and foreign enterprises to participate in investment and cooperation opportunities in Vietnam.

The Ministry of Information and Communications is working closely with other ministries and sectors to provide priority support for the development of the game industry, such as: eliminating unreasonable taxes; having pilot policies (sandbox) for new game genres; submitting to the Government a new Decree on game management, in which it is recommended to eliminate cumbersome licenses and administrative procedures to make it easier for game businesses to develop.
At the same time, the Ministry is determined to resolve three major problems of the Vietnamese gaming industry: Competition with illegal cross-border games; gaming businesses (publishers) cannot buy good games from abroad because they sell across borders; game producers are still very fragmented and not united.
According to Mr. Le Quang Tu Do, the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information and related units have been building important foundations, including training.
Currently, Vietnam Academy of Posts and Telecommunications trains game industry in a formal university-level direction; VTC Corporation trains skilled human resources, creating an abundant and highly qualified human resource in games.
Besides, it is necessary to change social prejudices so that games are an industry that creates values; parents have a perspective to let their children study and work in games such as game programming, game graphics, game design... and from there to create famous startups in the future./.
