According to information from a subcommittee of the Harvard Corporation - the agency that oversees Harvard University, Ms. Claudine Gay, President of Harvard University (USA) used "duplicated language without citing sources" in her 1997 doctoral thesis.

Specifically, Ms. Gay's doctoral dissertation, titled "Taking Power: Black Electoral Victory and the Redefinition of American Politics," quoted extensively from a 1996 work by Bradley Palmquist and Stephen Voss, but did not footnote or place the text in quotation marks.

Independent experts have also made a similar assessment, finding that Ms. Gay violated Harvard’s citation policies and calling the incident “regrettable.” However, the experts said the action did not amount to “research misconduct.”

Speaking out on the issue, a Harvard University representative said that Ms. Gay received her PhD in political science from Harvard. Following the accusations, she proactively requested to remove the duplicate content and will resubmit three revised and updated versions of her doctoral dissertation.

Claudine Gay, the first black female president of Harvard University, has come under scrutiny, particularly from conservative activists, following plagiarism allegations and amid heightened tensions on campus in Gaza. Earlier this month, Gay’s remarks about free speech on campus at a congressional hearing were criticized as overly legalistic and pro-Palestinian.

The House Education and Workforce Committee said on December 20 that it was reviewing and clarifying plagiarism allegations against Ms. Gay as part of a broader investigation into Harvard University.

For now, Harvard is standing by its president. In a statement last week, the Harvard Corporation said: “ In this tumultuous and difficult time, we stand united in our support of President Gay.”
