Ms. Le Thi My Dung - Deputy Director of the Pleiku City Agricultural Service Center - said: The model "Supporting the conversion of ineffective single-crop rice to growing waxy corn of Bach Long F1 variety" was implemented on an area of 17.86 hectares with the participation of more than 80 households in Chu A, An Phu communes, Thang Loi, Chi Lang and Hoa Lu wards. Accordingly, the Center supports 70% of the cost of seeds and fertilizers, while people contribute 30% of seeds and fertilizers and are self-sufficient in pesticides. To implement the model, the Center provided 187.5 kg of waxy corn of Bach Long F1 variety, more than 18 tons of fertilizers and organized 2 technical training courses to help people master the process of planting, caring for and harvesting.
In addition, during the implementation process, the Center sent specialized staff to coordinate with agricultural staff of communes and wards to regularly go to the gardens to grasp the growth and development of crops to promptly guide people on how to care for and prevent pests and diseases on crops effectively. After more than 2 months of planting, the corn plants grew and developed well, with fresh fruit yield reaching 12-14 tons/ha.
Ms. Ta Thi Thao - Civil servant of Land Administration - Agriculture of Chu A commune - said that the whole commune has 21 households participating in the model with a total area of 5.25 hectares. Through monitoring, the corn plants grow and develop well, with an average yield of 12-14 tons of fresh fruit/ha. In particular, the Bach Long F1 corn variety is favored by the market, so people have favorable product output. Currently, corn gardens are purchased by traders at the field by fruit or by kilogram with a purchase price of 10-12 thousand VND/kg. After deducting costs, people earn an average profit of nearly 10 million VND/sao.
Mr. On (Bong Phun village, Chu A commune) happily said: My family participated in the Bach Long F1 corn growing model on an area of 1.1 sao. Thanks to the support of 70% of seeds and fertilizers, I only spent about 3 million VND more on investment costs. When it came to harvest, traders bought the corn right at the field for 15.5 million VND. After deducting expenses, my family earned 12.5 million VND.
Similarly, Mr. Nuk (Bong Phun village) also said: His family has 1.5 sao of rice land. In previous years, he only grew rice in the summer-autumn crop, and in the winter-spring crop, he often lacked water so he left it fallow. This winter-spring crop, the Pleiku City Agricultural Service Center supported seeds and fertilizers, and he spent nearly 5 million VND on fertilizers, seeds, and hired plowmen to grow Bach Long F1 sticky corn. “Because I don’t have much experience, I planted at a sparse distance, resulting in a yield that is not as high as that of other households participating in the model. However, my corn garden still yielded 1.6 tons, selling for more than 18 million VND. After deducting expenses, my family made a profit of more than 13 million VND. In addition, I also took advantage of the corn stalks to feed the cows,” said Mr. Nuk.
The Deputy Director of the Pleiku City Agricultural Service Center added: The model "Supporting the conversion of ineffective single-crop rice to growing waxy corn of the Bach Long F1 variety" was deployed with the aim of helping people improve their knowledge of cultivation techniques and corn care to bring high productivity and efficiency. In particular, the Bach Long F1 corn variety can be harvested after just over 2 months, the plant is resistant to lodging during the rainy season, resistant to pests and diseases and has high productivity. In the coming time, the Center will coordinate with localities to propagate and mobilize people to gradually convert ineffective rice fields to grow Bach Long F1 sticky corn to adapt to climate change and gradually improve economic efficiency and income.
