With its easy cultivation, low investment costs, and suitability to the local soil conditions, the Cayen pineapple cultivation model in Phu Khe commune, Cam Khe district, has been bringing practical economic benefits to the people.

The effectiveness of the Cayen honey pineapple cultivation model.

Cayen pineapples grown in Phu Khe are known for their delicious aroma, attractive appearance, and high selling price, bringing practical economic benefits to the local people.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong, residing in Dong Muoi area and the first person to introduce the Cayen honey pineapple variety to the locality, said: “Through research on mass media, I learned that in provinces like Nghe An and Dak Lak , there is a Cayen honey pineapple variety with large, fragrant, and delicious fruits, containing a high amount of honey-like juice, and yielding a much higher harvest and selling price than local pineapples, making it popular with the market and people. In October 2020, I spent over 10 million VND to buy 5,000 Cayen honey pineapple seedlings to plant intercropped with Thai jackfruit trees on over 4,000 square meters of my family's hillside garden land.”

Thanks to the suitable local soil conditions and proper care from Ms. Hong, the Cayen pineapple plants have grown and developed well. After 18 months of planting, the pineapple plants began to yield fruit with a delicious aroma, making the product easy to sell and fetching a good price. Ms. Hong added: “Seeing my family successfully growing Cayen pineapples, some people in the commune followed suit. This year, the pineapple harvest is better than in previous years, and the prices are also higher; in addition to harvesting the fruit, there is also an additional source of income from selling seedlings, which is expected to bring in higher income than in previous years. Besides the more than 1 hectare currently being harvested, my family has 15,000 plants that will bear fruit next season.”

Local observations indicate that the Cayen honey pineapple variety is easy to cultivate, resistant to pests and diseases, requires minimal care, and is suitable for various soil types, especially hilly areas. The planting season runs from July to October annually. Harvesting begins 18 months after planting, and the harvesting period lasts 2-3 months, allowing farmers to proactively manage their product output. Cayen honey pineapples are high-yielding, producing large fruits weighing 2-3 kg, with an attractive shape, shallow eyes, and a delicious aroma, making them suitable for fresh consumption, juice processing, and canning.

People in Phu Khe commune harvest Cayen honey pineapples.

According to preliminary calculations, each hectare of Cayen honey pineapple can yield 7,000-10,000 fruits. Currently, with an average selling price of 20,000 VND/kg, the income could be 150-200 million VND/hectare/season. The product is purchased directly by traders, and there is currently insufficient supply to meet market demand.

Notably, in addition to yielding fruit, each Cayen pineapple plant produces 3-5 shoots, allowing farmers to independently source seedlings for the next season. Any surplus shoots are sold for 2,500-5,000 VND each, helping to increase income.

Comrade Vu Ngoc Manh - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Phu Khe commune, said: "Currently, the entire commune has nearly 20 households participating in planting Cayen honey pineapples with an area of about 3 hectares, of which 6 households plant a large number with quantities ranging from over 10,000 to over 50,000 plants, mainly concentrated in the Dong Muoi, Doai Trong, and Luong Luu areas... The Cayen honey pineapple planting model in the locality has been and is bringing effectiveness, attracting people from inside and outside the province to visit, learn from experience and successfully follow suit."

Given the practical effectiveness of the model, the District Farmers' Association recently conducted a field inspection with the aim of providing support to the people to replicate and expand the model on a larger scale.

With the involvement of local authorities, the coordination of the Farmers' Association in training, guiding, and transferring technical processes for planting and caring for pineapples to the people; creating conditions for people to expand the area of land suitable for planting honey pineapples; strengthening promotion, introduction, and finding markets for the product; encouraging people to cooperate, moving towards preliminary processing and processing to improve product quality, thereby maximizing the advantages and potential of the locality.
