At the age of 97, Mr. Nguyen Van Quang (left) in Phuc Tan village, Gia Tan commune (Gia Loc) still remembers the moment he heard the news about the Geneva Agreement being signed.

joy beyond measure

Mr. Nguyen Van Quang, born in 1927 in Phuc Tan village, Gia Tan commune (Gia Loc), participated in revolutionary activities for 16 years and directly participated in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. After the campaign was completely victorious, he continued to build the economy, then changed his career. In 1982, he retired.

Although he is 97 years old, when asked about the glorious years, Mr. Quang still clearly remembers each event. “After the Dien Bien Phu victory, my unit continued to stay and consolidate its forces, supporting local people in cleaning up the battlefield, building roads, and repairing bridges. At the end of July 1954, when we had just had dinner, the whole unit was listening to the news on the radio when we heard the news of the Geneva Accords being signed. We were so happy that we hugged each other, cheering and being happy,” Mr. Quang recalled.

“After hearing the news of the Geneva Agreement being signed, the unit organized a feast for our soldiers to celebrate the event. The spirit of our soldiers at that time was extremely happy and excited. Because through the radio and newspapers, our superiors informed us that the war in Vietnam and the Indochinese countries had been suspended, peace had been restored, especially the abolition of French rule in Indochina. Therefore, even though the conditions were still difficult, we still tried our best, regardless of hunger, cold, and deprivation, to continue to hold out on the Northwest battlefield,” Mr. Quang added.

This year, 93 years old, Mr. Pham Van Liem in An Dinh village, An Thanh commune (Tu Ky) still remembers the days of participating in the mission in Dien Bien Phu Campaign. In 1951, when he was just 21 years old, he joined the army. He was assigned to the 316th Division (then called the Cao - Bac - Lang Division). During the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, his unit directly captured and placed explosives on Hill A1, where the fiercest battle between our army and the French colonialists took place during the campaign. For several months of fighting with the enemy, not having enough food, not enough water, witnessing many comrades being injured and sacrificed, brave soldiers like Mr. Liem still kept the integrity of a revolutionary soldier.

At the end of the campaign, Mr. Liem's unit continued to stay to protect the target, participate in clearing, repairing, and building roads. "That day, around July 22-23, 1954, when we were protecting the target, we received news of the signing of the Geneva Agreement. We burst into joy. The soldiers, frontline laborers, and people were all excited. Many people shouted: "The French army has gone home. The North is completely liberated. Peace is here." In that joy, the working spirit and training will of the cadres and soldiers of the Division were very enthusiastic," Mr. Liem recounted.

Revival

In 1954, at the age of 21, Mr. Cao Xuan Don (now 91 years old) from Pham Su Menh Street (Hai Duong City) volunteered to join the army. He was assigned to Unit C295, Youth Volunteer Team 34 with the task of clearing bombs and mines; ensuring smooth traffic in the Ta Vai bridge area (Son La), serving the Dien Bien Phu Campaign.

During the days of participating in the campaign, clearing bombs and mines, clearing the line between life and death; the conditions of food, accommodation and living were extremely difficult and deprived, but the young volunteers like him all shared a great determination for peace, for independence and freedom. Mr. Don said that he directly witnessed many comrades fall, so when he heard the news of the Geneva Agreement being signed, he and his comrades felt like they were "revived". "One of the most valuable pieces of information for us at that time was that the French army had to withdraw, and North Vietnam was completely liberated. Everyone was extremely excited and together they thoroughly grasped the spirit of working enthusiastically, together building and protecting the Fatherland", Mr. Don emotionally recalled.

According to Mr. Do Trong Loi in Toan Thang commune (Gia Loc), former Chairman of the Provincial Veterans Association, the Geneva Agreement was a continuation of the victory of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, turning victory on the battlefield into victory at the negotiating table, directly contributing to the end of French colonial rule in Vietnam and the Indochinese countries. 70 years after the signing of the agreement, our country has gone from victory to victory, achieving many great achievements. In those achievements, there is the important and great contribution of the army and people of Hai Duong.
