Politico on January 5 quoted an informed source revealing that the late Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was assassinated by Israel while in the armed group's operations room.
Hezbollah's senior security official Wafiq Safa told a news conference on January 5 that the late leader Hassan Nasrallah often coordinated the war from a building in Lebanon that was hit by an Israeli airstrike in September 2024. Safa said Nasrallah was killed in Hezbollah's operations room, although he did not provide further details.

Nasrallah's assassination marked the beginning of a large-scale Israeli military offensive into Lebanon that escalated fighting between Israel and Hezbollah for nearly two months before a ceasefire was agreed on November 27, 2024. Media outlets previously reported that Nasrallah and senior officials were meeting in the basement at the time of the attack. Lebanese health officials said six people were killed. Safa was believed to have been targeted by Israel before the ceasefire but is now safe.
Israel assassinates Hezbollah leader: elaborate preparation, decisive action
On January 5, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that if Hezbollah forces do not withdraw to the Litani River area in southern Lebanon according to the ceasefire terms, the agreement is at risk of collapsing, according to The Times of Israel .
Previously, Hezbollah's current leader, Naim Kassem, stressed that the armed group could attack Israel if Tel Aviv's army did not withdraw from southern Lebanon. Israel and Hezbollah have repeatedly blamed each other for violating the ceasefire.
"Our patience (regarding Israel's ceasefire violations) may run out or it may continue as it is now. When we decide to act, everyone will see it immediately," Qassem said on January 4.
