Before the first leg of the 2024 ASEAN Cup final, Thai defender Chalermsak boldly declared that he "didn't know who Xuan Son was", affirming that he and his teammates would "kill" the 27-year-old striker. But in reality, Xuan Son had an excellent match with a double to help Vietnam win 2-1 against Thailand. While Chalermsak was one of the worst players in the match and he also made a mistake that led to Xuan Son's second goal in the 73rd minute. That made Chalermsak the most criticized and ridiculed player after the match. While Thai fans criticized Chalermsak for his "terrible" performance, Vietnamese fans mocked the player with the question: "Do you know who Son is now?". The fan page of Southeast Asian football fans ASEAN Football also posted a status that both praised Xuan Son and mocked Chalermsak with the content: "He is Son and cannot be stopped". Striker Nguyen Xuan Son (Rafaelson) also joined in the fun with a "teasing" introduction on his Rafaelson Fernandes Facebook page. He wrote: "Nice to meet you, my name is: Nguyen Xuan Son. Nice to meet you, my name is Nguyen Xuan Son! Keep it up, guys". In response to public opinion, Chalermsak also publicly apologized on his personal Instagram. Chalermsak wrote: "I'm sorry. I regret the mistake I made. My teammates must be tired. I apologize to the Thai team".
