On the morning of December 21, Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden held an event to celebrate Santa Bear's 4th birthday.
This is not only a special occasion for the Zoo to share joy with visitors but also a meaningful call: "Please care, love and protect animals, protect the natural environment, which is also protecting our own lives."
Santa Bear's 4th birthday party was held at the Zoo
Santa Bear is a sun bear – a rare animal listed as protected by CITES and Vietnamese law. Sun bears are the smallest bear species in the world, living mainly in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. They possess many unique characteristics, from their jet-black fur to their long tongues adapted to eating insects.
Sharing about Noel's journey of growing up, Mr. Mai Khac Trung Truc, director of the Zoo and Botanical Garden animal enterprise, said that the bear was born at the end of 2020 to the surprise and joy of the Zoo and Botanical Garden staff. This is one of the few cases of sun bears successfully reproducing naturally in captivity. The baby bear was named Noel because its birth date was close to Christmas. However, Noel's journey to birth was not easy.
Mr. Truc said that because mother bear Mi was old and her pelvis was not open well, Noel had problems with her skull right after birth. With the dedicated care of the team of veterinarians and caregivers, the little princess overcame the difficulties and had a successful "puberty".

From a young age, Noel was cared for by the method of raising animals, living in a warm cardboard box with soft towels and heating lamps. From the veterinary room, Noel gradually moved to a larger playground and gradually got to know her mother Mi and father Sol. The little bear had a memorable childhood, from making friends with a baby ape, learning to eat fruit, to playing in water and climbing trees.
Noel especially loves sweets, coconuts and termite nests – gifts that his foster parents often prepare. The image of Noel eagerly receiving a box of cream puffs on his first birthday or excitedly participating in football prediction missions has become an unforgettable impression for staff and visitors.
Noel’s 4th birthday event this year had a special highlight. Some of the bear’s “die-hard fans” worked with the Zoo staff to decorate the Christmas tree with the bear family’s favorite foods. The birthday presents were placed in different locations in the bear’s area, encouraging Noel and his family to explore and discover.
In addition, recently the Santa bear won a photo contest organized by the Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and was humorously dubbed by visitors as Miss Grand Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
"The event is not only an opportunity to show gratitude to those who have accompanied Noel in taking care of him, but also an opportunity to raise public awareness about protecting wild animals. The success in breeding and caring for Noel bears is a clear demonstration of the Zoo's continuous efforts in animal conservation." - Mr. Truc shared.
Stories like Noel not only bring joy but also inspire responsibility in each person to preserve and protect the ecosystem, towards a more sustainable future for all.
The Zoo is a cultural symbol of Ho Chi Minh City.
The Zoo is one of the eight zoos with a long history in Asia and the world, established and built in 1864, now 160 years old.
Currently, the Zoo cares for and raises 2,144 animals of 128 species. Imported animals also grow and develop well such as giraffes, hippos, zebras, lions, Bengal tigers, etc.
In addition, the Zoo has over 2,500 large trees of 380 species.
In addition to being a favorite tourist destination for many young people, this place also attracts many students to learn about animals and plants and experience interesting activities.
