CarNewschina reported that IM Motors announced that the IM L6 will soon be available for sale. The expected launch date of this model is around next May.

The special feature of this car model is that it is equipped with a solid-state battery system, with extremely fast charging speed. This is considered the first car model equipped with the first mass-produced solid-state battery in the electric car industry.

More details will be announced by the company at the IM L6 Technology Conference on April 8. It is known that the new battery will have a capacity of up to 130 kWh.

The biggest difference between solid-state batteries and current battery technology is that the electrolyte is solid. The IM L6's battery system uses a nano-sized electrolyte that the automaker developed and has been patented.

Solid-state batteries have “high ionic conductivity and high temperature resistance.” That means there’s less risk of fire. Plus, the solid electrolyte gives the battery a low internal resistance, meaning it can charge extremely quickly. The technology solves the problem of high expansion of silicon-based materials, ensuring stability and allowing for better charge/discharge performance, making it safer.

IM announced at the Geneva Motor Show that the L6 equipped with a solid-state battery will have an operating range of 1,000 km according to CLTC testing standards or 800 km according to WLTP testing standards.

SAIC aims to launch the IM brand internationally this year, with sales set to begin in Europe next year. It is unclear at this time whether IM models will be rebranded as MGs in Europe or will continue to be called IMs.

IM Motors was established in 2020 as a joint venture between SAIC Motor, Alibaba Group and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech. The first vehicle is the L7 sedan, which will go on sale in 2022, followed by the LS7 and LS6 SUVs.
