Today (June 14) is World Blood Donor Day, the World Health Organization has chosen the message 'Donate blood and plasma regularly. Share love, give life' to call on everyone to donate blood and blood components regularly, including plasma.
Every year, millions of people around the world volunteer to donate blood, contributing to the invaluable life of patients. To acknowledge and express gratitude for this noble act, since 2005, the World Health Organization has chosen June 14 as International Blood Donor Day.
This is also the birthday of scientist Karl Landsteiner – who discovered the ABO blood group system, opening a new era of safe blood transfusion.
Blood donation is a good deed that people do regularly.
In 2023, the World Health Organization chose the message for June 14 as “Donate blood and plasma regularly. Share love, give life”. The message aims to call on everyone to donate blood and blood components regularly, including plasma.
Along with blood cells (red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets), plasma is also an important component of blood, containing mainly water and many substances that are essential for the body's development and metabolism.
In many countries around the world, apheresis plasma donation is relatively common. The number of liters of plasma received per 1,000 people in the Czech Republic is 45 liters; similarly, the figures in Hungary, Germany and the Netherlands are 41, 36 and 19 liters respectively. In the global event to celebrate World Blood Donor Day on June 14, 2017, hosted by Vietnam, the record-breaking blood donor from the Netherlands also participated with a total of 641 donations, including 415 plasma donations. In Vietnam, plasma donation is not as widely implemented as platelet donation, but it is a trend that the Hematology - Blood Transfusion industry is aiming for.
It is wonderful that the number of regular blood donors in Vietnam is increasing, the meaning of blood donation is spreading to many classes of people. Tens of thousands of people have regularly performed this simple action, considering it a habit, a simple task, a daily way of life to bring joy and happiness to themselves and to those who need blood.
Evaluating this meaningful activity in recent times, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ha Thanh, Director of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, said: “After many years of promoting voluntary blood donation, we have seen a fundamental change in the awareness of all classes of people across the country. Blood donation has become an action, a noble gesture that is regularly performed by everyone, by all classes in society, and with the participation of Party agencies, the government and all people.”
Thanks to that, in recent years, there has been almost no blood shortage during the summer and Tet holidays, and patients no longer have to wait for blood due to a lack of blood donors.
Moved by gratitude and appreciation to the blood donors, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ha Thanh shared: “On behalf of the patients who need blood, and the doctors who need blood for treatment, I would like to express my most sincere thanks to the voluntary blood donors across the country for their contributions in recent years.”
In Vietnam, since 2007, the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation at all levels has organized activities in response to International Blood Donor Day on June 14 to recognize and honor the noble deeds of blood donors.
In 2022, the whole country mobilized and received more than 1.4 million units of blood, basically meeting the blood needs for emergency care and patient treatment; the voluntary blood donation rate reached 99%; the rate of blood donation among the population reached nearly 1.5%. Many communication campaigns and voluntary blood donation events were creatively and successfully organized such as: National Voluntary Blood Donation Day on April 7, International Blood Donor Day on June 14, Voluntary Blood Donation Campaign on the occasion of Tet and the Spring Festival, the Summer Blood Drops Campaign and the Red Journey...
Of the more than 1.4 million blood units nationwide, the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion has received 379,161 units of blood, accounting for 26.4% of the total blood received nationwide. The Institute has also prepared and provided nearly 688,000 units of blood products to 181 medical facilities in 29 provinces/cities.
