North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has inspected areas near the country's border with China that have been affected by flooding, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.
According to KCNA, record-breaking rains in Sinuiju and nearby areas bordering China have left about 5,000 people isolated. On July 28, the North Korean military dispatched about 10 planes, each making 20 flights, to participate in the rescue work and evacuate about 4,200 people from the danger zone in half a day.
The area was severely affected by Typhoon Gaemi, which caused heavy rain for many days across many areas in China and North Korea.
Meanwhile, in China, the country's Ministry of Emergency Management announced that it had activated an emergency response mechanism for a geological disaster in Hunan Province, after a landslide caused by heavy rains caused multiple casualties in the province. The Hunan Provincial Emergency Response Command Center said the death toll from the landslide that occurred around 8 a.m. on July 28 in Yuelin Village, Hengyang City, had risen to 15.
Also on July 28, China's Ministry of Emergency Management raised the flood emergency response level from level IV to level III in Jilin Province and activated a level IV emergency response in Chongqing City.
