As planned, today, January 8, 7th grade students in junior high schools in Thai Binh City (Thai Binh Province) will take the first semester exam, including 3 subjects: English, math (morning), and literature (afternoon).

After discovering errors in the math test, teachers at the schools made students stay in class until the end of the scheduled time. In the afternoon, students still took the literature test as usual. The math test is scheduled to be re-taken on January 10.

Picking up her child after school, Ms. Nguyen Thanh H., whose child is in 7th grade, was surprised when her child announced: The math test was postponed and they will retake the test on January 10.

Ms. H. worriedly called other parents, but the only information they heard from their children was that the math test today was postponed. The children told each other that the reason for the postponement was because the test was wrong, Ms. H. said.

Similarly, after 10am, Mr. L. (residing in Quang Trung ward, Thai Binh city) went to pick up his child. Mr. L. heard his child announce that the math test was postponed, so he was confused and asked around.

“Although it was just a semester test, I was worried and afraid that the results would not be as expected, so I studied day and night. Today, due to some “mistake” in the test, you have to retake the test another day, making you tired and worried.

My husband and I planned that after our children finished their exams today, we would have the rest of the week off, and in the evening we would let them go to their grandparents’ house for a few days, and ask them to help look after them. At the end of the year, both of us are busy with work. Now we have to wait until January 10th to finish our children’s exams. Otherwise, we could send two of them back to the countryside to play, and one of them would stay to study for the exam…”, Mr. L. sighed.

Ms. Nguyen Thi MN, whose child is in 7th grade, was also upset: “The semester test should be easy, why not let the children take the test in class as usual instead of organizing a centralized test. Having to retest affects the children’s psychology. What is the cause of this mistake, who is responsible?”

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online at noon on January 8, a principal of a middle school in Thai Binh City said that it was true that “there was a mistake in the first semester math test in the morning, but it was discovered in time. The test department “mistakenly” bound the questions between the textbooks Canh Dieu and Ket Ket Tri Thuc . On January 10, the students will retake the math test,” the principal said.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online by phone, a leader of the Department of Education and Training of Thai Binh province said he had not been informed about this issue.

“The responsibility belongs to the Department of Education and Training of Thai Binh City, but when there is an incident, the department still has to report to the department. The department will request an immediate report,” he said.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online over the phone, Mr. Vu Giang Lam - Head of the Department of Education and Training of Thai Binh City - said that this afternoon he worked with the inspection team of the Department of Education and Training on this issue.
