CNN reported on November 21 that American Airlines will expand new technology at more than 100 airports nationwide to prevent passengers from jostling to board planes.
The technology will be deployed before Thanksgiving on November 28.
The airline has been testing the measure at Albuquerque International Sunport, Ronald Reagan Washington National and Tucson International airports over the past month to perfect the process before rolling it out more widely.
Accordingly, when passengers intentionally board the plane before their turn, this technology will emit a sound to warn the gate staff.
“In such cases, our staff will invite the guest back into line until they are called,” American Airlines said in a statement.
Using this technology could help reduce crowds of people gathering near boarding gates, causing confusion and congestion, and sometimes even blocking airport aisles.
These crowds are commonly known as gate lice , a term used to describe passengers who gather around the boarding gate, especially when they try to stand too close to the ticket control area, causing congestion and chaos in the area.
In addition, this technology also brings many other benefits such as helping staff grasp the exact number of passengers, thereby improving the process of coordinating passengers to board the plane.
According to Julie Rath, senior vice president of American Airlines, the airline has received positive feedback from both passengers and employees after testing the new technology at three airports.
Among the 100 airports that are about to deploy this new technology is Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta (USA), the airport famous for its busiest passenger traffic in the world.
American Airlines also plans to expand the technology to other hubs and airports in the coming months.
The airline expects to carry nearly 8.3 million passengers on more than 77,000 flights during the Thanksgiving holiday from November 21 to December 3.
