Airlines want passengers to not bring clothes when traveling to Japan

If you're looking for the answer to what to wear when traveling to Japan, Japan Airlines' answer might be "nothing."

Japan Airlines began testing a new service called Any Wear, Anywhere in July, allowing customers to rent clothes while in Japan. The airline will provide clothes sorted by season, gender, size, and style. Customers simply log on to the website and choose what they like, along with a pick-up and return time. The clothes are all used or leftovers from garment factories.

These clothes will be delivered to the hotel where you are staying. At the end of the trip, the guests return home and the clothes will also be returned to the company, cleaned and put back into the system. The price of this service is from 34 to 48 USD, the trial period lasts until the end of August 2024.

“I love traveling, but I’m afraid of having to carry luggage or do laundry abroad,” said Miho Moriya, who came up with the idea and runs the service Any Wear, Anywhere. According to Miho, the three most important things when traveling are food, accommodation, and clothing. The first two are readily available, but few places offer clothes for tourists to rent.

The service has received positive feedback. “We have received requests from passengers from 115 countries without running any ads,” Miho said. The United States and Australia are the countries with the highest number of customers using this service.

The airline representative said the clothing rental service was created to reduce carbon emissions by reducing the weight of the aircraft. Travelers using the Any wear, Anywhere service do not need to bring many clothes or bring nothing except the clothes they are wearing. As a result, the weight of luggage is significantly reduced. The impact of the trial will be revealed in August 2024, Japan Airlines will count the weight reduction and calculate the exact reduction in emissions.

“We have to see the final results before we can say whether this service is sustainable,” Miho said, adding that the results will take into account the emissions generated from delivering clothes and doing laundry.

Nina Gbor, a sustainable fashion expert and educator, said the project is a positive step. “People buy new clothes just for vacations and business trips, so this service will reduce unnecessary clothing waste and save money,” Gbor said.
