On the morning of October 1, at the Seongnam Air Base, south of Seoul, South Korea began a military parade to celebrate the 76th anniversary of the founding of its armed forces, with the presence of large weapons systems, a move to warn of the growing threat from North Korea's missiles and nuclear weapons.
About 5,000 soldiers and 340 pieces of military equipment, including Hyunmoo surface-to-surface missiles, K9 self-propelled artillery and four-legged robots, were mobilized to participate in the ceremony, the South Korean Ministry of National Defense said.
According to the ministry, the event was held to demonstrate South Korea's "overwhelming" capability to strongly respond to potential enemy provocations with a series of key weapon systems, including the Hyunmoo missile and the long-range surface-to-air missile (L-SAM) system.
Previously, South Korean military officials said that this year's event will feature the Hyunmoo-5 missile, a key component of the Korea Massive Punishment and Retaliation (KMPR) program, capable of carrying an 8-9 ton warhead and destroying underground bunkers.
This year's anniversary comes as North Korea in recent weeks has revealed a uranium enrichment facility, stepped up ballistic missile launches and sent balloons containing waste across the border.
It is reported that the US will send B-1B bombers to fly over Seoul along with allied fighter jets during the parade on the afternoon of October 1.
Responding to this information, North Korean Vice Defense Minister Kim Kang Il strongly criticized, accusing Washington of carrying out a "reckless military show" and causing tension.
North Korea can consider new action plans at any time, Kim Kang II said, pledging to continue improving the country's "war deterrent."
However, the South Korean military and the US Forces in the Northeast Asian country have not confirmed the bomber's participation in the event.
In another development, on the same day, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that in a message sent to Chinese President Xi Jinping on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the country's National Day (October 1), North Korean President Kim Jong Un reaffirmed that relations with Beijing will be even stronger.
Mr. Kim Jong Un expressed: "I believe that the friendship and cooperation between the two countries will develop more and more strongly, in accordance with the requirements of the new era and the aspirations and wishes of the people of the two countries."
According to the leader, this is the consistent stance of the North Korean party and government "to consolidate and steadily develop the traditional friendly relations" between Pyongyang and Beijing.
