Kyodo news agency reported that top diplomats from South Korea, Japan and China met in Busan (South Korea) on November 26 and agreed to arrange a trilateral summit at an early date.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa said the meeting, the first in four years, also discussed North Korea's recent spy satellite launch. She suggested that China, which has major economic influence over North Korea, should play a role in dealing with Pyongyang's missile program.

The Covid-19 pandemic, along with tensions and disagreements, have hampered trilateral talks since a summit in December 2019 and a meeting between the three countries' foreign ministers in August 2019. Both meetings took place in China.

Foreign Minister Kamikawa also said she agreed to promote cooperation between the three countries in areas such as public health, security and trade, while preparing for the summit.

The South Korean representative attending the meeting on November 26 was Foreign Minister Park Jin, while the Chinese representative was Politburo member and Director of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China - Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

South Korea currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the trilateral framework and is expected to host the trilateral summit before the end of this year.

However, a senior official from the South Korean presidential office said on a television program on November 26 that it would not be easy to hold a summit before the end of this year.

Japan's foreign minister shared the view with the meeting's participants that promoting practical and future-oriented cooperation among the three Asian neighbors is "important for regional and world peace."

South Korea's foreign minister said stability on the Korean peninsula was a "prerequisite for peace and prosperity" in the region.

For his part, Wang Yi said that Beijing is willing to work with Tokyo and Seoul to bring trilateral cooperation back on track and seek stable development.

Regarding the Hamas-Israel conflict, three diplomats agreed that improving the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is important and that diplomatic efforts need to continue, according to NHK.
