Limit the use of pesticides in agricultural production

Việt NamViệt Nam23/01/2025

Pesticides play an important role in agricultural production, helping to increase productivity and quality of agricultural products. However, using pesticides improperly, not ensuring quarantine time, and littering packaging after use are also factors that cause environmental pollution and people's health. Recognizing this problem, localities have actively promoted people to limit the use, collect and properly dispose of pesticide packaging.

Limit the use of pesticides in agricultural production People in Vinh Hung commune (Vinh Loc) use biological pesticides to take care of their crops.

In Truong Xuan commune (Tho Xuan), cucumbers have economic value suitable to the characteristics of the land, so people grow them in a concentrated, large-scale manner with an area of nearly 60 hectares. To have a cucumber field with high productivity and beautiful appearance, fertilizers and pesticides must be used during the care process, from stimulating fruit set to preventing pests and diseases, because cucumbers are a continuous fruit-bearing plant, harvested in many alternating batches. Faced with that reality, agricultural staff of the Commune People's Committee and Tho Xuan Agricultural Service and Cucumber Cooperative have guided people to apply science and technology in care, prevent pests and diseases, limit and use pesticides properly; strictly follow the quarantine period... Ms. Trinh Thi Thao, a resident of Long Linh Ngoai 1 village, said: "We are instructed to use pesticides on the permitted list, which are less toxic to humans, prioritize the use of biological pesticides, which have a quick decomposition time, and a short quarantine period. In particular, in the mid to late season, when the plants flower and bear fruit, and are continuously harvested, we often encounter pests such as yellow powder, white powder, leaf miners, etc. that affect crop yields, but we only use herbal medicines, biological and new-generation chemical products when pests arise and cause damage at high densities.

Currently, pesticides are considered the leading factor in controlling and preventing pests. However, if the quality does not meet regulations and the producer does not use them properly, pesticides can affect the environment, crops and human health, reducing the quality and competitiveness of agricultural products. In particular, they kill both insects and beneficial microorganisms, creating conditions for diseases to develop and break out more strongly... In this situation, in addition to propaganda work on the proper use of pesticides, since 2018, the Thanh Hoa Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection has coordinated with the districts of Thieu Hoa, Hoang Hoa, Quang Xuong, Cam Thuy... to deploy a model of using biological pesticides to replace chemical pesticides on vegetables, tubers and fruits.

In Phu Loc commune (Hau Loc), Phu Loc Agricultural Service Cooperative has built a specialized vegetable growing area and linked with many businesses to consume products. Mr. Hoang Van Toan, Director of Phu Loc Agricultural Service Cooperative, said: “On an area of 200 hectares, the cooperative links with people to consume products, 40 hectares of which are produced according to VietGAP standards. The crops grown on the specialized land area are mainly sweet corn, potatoes, soybeans, spinach, etc. During the production process, the cooperative always focuses on instructing people to use manual measures to limit the use of pesticides or, if necessary, prioritize the use of biological pesticides to protect the environment.”

Using biological pesticides in cultivation, especially for those susceptible to pests and diseases such as vegetables, fruit trees, etc., will be highly effective. Because biological pesticides do not leave residues in agricultural products, they are safe for producers and users; they decompose quickly in nature, and have a short quarantine period. Biological pesticides do not eliminate all pests or pathogens, but only reduce the pressure of pests and diseases below the harmful threshold, and do not create resistance. Therefore, they will not affect biodiversity in the agricultural ecosystem.

The effectiveness of pesticides on crops cannot be denied, therefore, localities need to provide people with a list and reputable addresses of reputable biological pesticides so that people do not buy poor quality products; comply with reasonable quarantine periods. In addition, promote propaganda so that people can access biological pesticides; increase training sessions on integrated pest management on crops for experts and people; techniques for using pesticides, safe agricultural production; access to new techniques to move towards not using pesticides in production. At the same time, expand the area of safe agricultural production, and link production with businesses to increase product value.
