Two criminal cases involving US President-elect Donald Trump have been dismissed at the request of special prosecutor Jack Smith.

Special prosecutor Jack Smith on November 25 asked Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington, DC to dismiss the 2020 election interference case. At the same time, Mr. Smith also withdrew his appeal in the case of Mr. Trump's retention of classified documents in Florida. The judge in this case dismissed the case but Mr. Smith appealed, according to ABC News.

The decision was made as Mr. Trump prepares to be re-elected president in January 2025, while the US Department of Justice has had a policy since the 1970s of not prosecuting presidents, regardless of the truth or falsity of the accusation.

Mr. Smith still asked the judge to continue the case in Florida against two other defendants, Mr. Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira.

Following the special counsel’s recommendation, Judge Chutkan dismissed the election interference charges against Mr. Trump, arguing that such a decision was appropriate and would not harm the public interest. However, the judge agreed with the prosecutor’s argument that Mr. Trump’s immunity would not apply after he leaves office.

However, observers say the possibility of Mr. Trump being prosecuted again with the same charges after 4 years is extremely unlikely because the statute of limitations for the charges will end.

President-elect Donald Trump did not win as big as he claimed.

Trump spokesman Steven Cheung called the developments a “big victory.” The president-elect has not commented on the case, but has previously tweeted that the cases were a “terrible milestone in the country’s history.”

In addition to the two cases, Mr. Trump was convicted of paying hush money to an adult film star in New York before the 2016 election and another case in Georgia that also involved an effort to overturn the 2016 election results. The sentencing in New York has been postponed indefinitely while the Georgia case is also pending.
