At the 21st session of the Hai Phong City People's Council held on the morning of December 4, responding to voters' opinions, the leader of the Hai Phong City People's Committee said that the project to build Tan Vu - Lach Huyen 2 Bridge and the approach road has been completed by the Department of Transport to send to the Department of Planning and Investment to submit to the Hai Phong City People's Committee for consideration. The project is expected to be submitted to the Prime Minister for consideration and approval in the first quarter of 2025.
According to the proposal of the Department of Transport of Hai Phong City, Tan Vu - Lach Huyen 2 bridge will be built on the left side of the existing Tan Vu - Lach Huyen bridge with a length of about 5.44km and a cross-section of 16m.
At the same time, the project will expand the approach road at both ends of the bridge with a length of about 9.86 km. The project will also expand the approach road from the current 4 lanes to 6 motor lanes and 4 mixed lanes.
The total investment is expected to be over VND8,700 billion, including interest. The capital source includes VND6,455 billion from the Korean Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) and VND2,255 billion from local budget counterpart capital.
Tan Vu - Lach Huyen sea bridge connecting the mainland of Hai An district with Cat Hai island was inaugurated and put into operation in 2017. The total length of the route is 15.63 km, of which the sea bridge is 5.44 km long, making it the longest sea bridge in Vietnam to date. The bridge's operation has completely solved the traffic connection problem between Hai Phong city and Cat Hai island, replacing the old sea ferry route.
However, due to the rapid development of the seaport system, industrial projects, and the number of tourists to Cat Ba Island, the number of vehicles passing through Tan Vu - Lach Huyen bridge has exceeded the design capacity, so it is necessary to build a new bridge to solve the overload of the existing bridge, meet the increasing transportation demand and promote regional economic development.
