Dao Trong Cuong (class 7I0, Newton Secondary - High School), Gold Medal, Excellent prize in Theory exam

Dao Trong Cuong is one of the most special contestants of the Vietnamese student delegation at the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) 2024 because this year is his third year participating in the competition. Previously, when he was a 5th and 6th grader, Cuong registered for the official Vietnamese team to participate in the competition and both times, he won the Gold Medal in Science.

"This year I continued to win the Gold Medal, but what's more special is that I also won the Best Prize in the Theory exam" - Cuong happily said.

For science, each candidate will have to go through 2 parts: Theory and Practice. The content of the exam is diverse, including biology, physics and astrophysics.

Cuong assessed the Theory test as difficult with 30 multiple choice questions and 9 essay questions. In the Practical test, he did two experiments in physics. With the experience of taking the test twice and practicing regularly at school, Cuong completed the test well.

According to his relatives, Cuong has loved science since kindergarten, when he read the Encyclopedia. Because he learned to read early, he was able to discover knowledge and new things about the world around him through books, watching videos, programs on TED-Ed and SciShow (TV programs on science topics).

“I love science because it gives me a lot of interesting knowledge that can be applied in life. I will definitely pursue a career in science in the future,” said a 7th grader at Newton School.

“Knowing that my son is passionate about science, my parents can only encourage and create the best conditions for him. To achieve today's achievements, in addition to my own efforts, he is also lucky to have teachers and the Board of Directors of Newton Secondary and High School who have a systematic training plan,” said Mr. Dao Trong Tuong, Cuong's father.

Accompanying Cuong since grade 5, Ms. Nguyen Thanh Huyen, IMSO Science team leader of Newton Inter-level School, commented that the student has logical thinking, good memory, quick calculation, and especially the ability to take scientific notes. He often listens to the whole thing, then writes it down in a diagram, systematizing knowledge in a concise and easy-to-understand way.

Cuong's Best Award in the Theory exam surprised his teacher because he had just returned to study for a short time. According to Ms. Huyen, this result was thanks to Cuong's solid background knowledge and self-study ability, along with the guidance of his teachers.

Nguyen Hoang Bach (grade 7A, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted), Gold Medal, Excellent prize for Discovery exam

At this year's competition, 6 Hanoi students won Gold Medals in Mathematics, including Nguyen Hoang Bach, class 7A, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, who won the Best Prize in the Discovery competition.

Sharing his happiness after the exam, Nguyen Hoang Bach said he was very surprised to win two top prizes.

“This is my first time participating in the IMSO competition. When I was honored with the Best Award for the Discovery competition, I was very happy and raised the red flag with a yellow star when I went up to the podium to receive the award. At that time, I was very happy and proud,” Bach shared.

According to Hoang Bach, when he became an official member of an international intellectual playground like IMSO, his biggest pressure was how to allocate time to do his homework reasonably. “I loved math since I was a child. When I entered middle school, I learned from good teachers, which made me even more passionate about this subject. I spent a lot of time studying and doing math every day,” Bach said.

Regarding the IMSO 2024 exam, because the host country China moved the exam schedule up 2 months, Bach and his friends only had about 2 weeks to focus on studying. In the Discovery exam, the judges posed a question and asked the candidates to give an answer without any specific explanation. Bach completed this exam excellently and became the candidate with the highest score.

It is known that in elementary school, Bach studied at a public school in Ha Dong district. He rarely went to extra classes, and most of his knowledge was acquired through self-study and self-accumulation.

Ms. Ha, Bach's mother, modestly shared that although she was very happy that her son achieved good results in this competition, for the family, this was simply an intellectual playground, where he could exchange and learn. The path of learning and conquering knowledge is still very long ahead, so he needs to constantly strive and try to achieve higher results.

The 2024 International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) will take place from October 1 to 6 in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province (China) with the participation of 18 countries and 300 contestants.

Participating in IMSO 2024, the Vietnamese team has 24 students from public and non-public primary and secondary schools in Hanoi.

Surpassing many excellent competitors from 18 countries, the Vietnamese team achieved the highest results ever with 2 Best Awards in the Discovery exam (math) and the Theory exam (science) with 9 Gold Medals, 14 Silver Medals and 1 Bronze Medal (an increase of 1 Gold Medal, 1 Silver Medal compared to IMSO in 2023). In the final result, Vietnam was ranked 2nd overall.

The two schools with the most students participating and winning medals this year are Newton Inter-level School and Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.
