From handmade products to OCOP products

The incense making profession in Quoc Tuan commune (Nam Sach) has existed for hundreds of years. All three villages of the commune, including An Xa, Dong Thon and Truc Tri, have been recognized as traditional craft villages. The incense making profession has created jobs and income for local people, while contributing to the overall development of the commune. Currently, the whole commune has 48 incense making households with about 1,200 workers, of which nearly 50% are over working age. The average income is 5 million VND/person/month.

Mr. Nguyen Ba Dung, Party Secretary and Chairman of the People's Committee of Quoc Tuan Commune, said that the incense making profession has brought high income to the people and also changed the face of the village. Grasping the increasing market demand for traditional incense, many households have applied scientific and technological advances to mass production, while preserving traditional secrets. In particular, in the context of economic integration, some households have seized the opportunity to switch from traditional craft village handicraft products to OCOP products, helping Quoc Tuan incense reach further in the market.

Like Quoc Tuan, Hoang Dieu leather shoe village (Gia Loc) has a 500-year history. In 2004 and 2005, the People's Committee of Hai Duong province granted certificates of recognition as traditional craft villages to all four villages of Phong Lam, Truc Lam, Van Lam and Nghia Hy. This has motivated craftsmen to focus on production and preserving traditional crafts. To date, the craft village has hundreds of households and businesses participating in leather shoe production, creating jobs for thousands of workers.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Vo, General Secretary of Hai Duong Leather and Footwear Association, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hai Duong Leather and Footwear Production, Trade and Service Cooperative said: "Hoang Dieu Commune is the only cooperative in the country whose leather shoe products are recognized as OCOP products. From ordinary handmade products, the products have been upgraded to typical local products. Currently, the products of the craft village are being displayed and introduced at the Con Son - Kiep Bac Autumn Festival, attracting many visitors."

Hai Duong currently has 66 craft villages, of which 12 have many products that have been recognized as OCOP products such as Hoang Dieu leather shoes (Gia Loc); Dong Giao carpentry in Luong Dien commune, Phu Loc wine in Cam Vu commune (Cam Giang), Quoc Tuan incense (Nam Sach); Chau Khe gold and silver in Thuc Khang commune, Cay pottery in Long Xuyen commune (Binh Giang); Hoi Yen rice paper in Chi Lang Nam commune, Tao Khe rice paper in Chi Lang Bac commune (Thanh Mien); Xuan Neo lace embroidery in Hung Dao commune (Tu Ky); Lo Cuong rice paper in Tu Minh ward (Hai Duong city); Mat Son broom in Chi Minh ward (Chi Linh city); Man De craft village in Nam Trung commune (Nam Sach). Craft villages not only create jobs and improve the lives of people in rural areas but also contribute to preserving and promoting unique cultural values in each locality.

Mr. Le Cong Hung, owner of Duc Hung incense production facility in Quoc Tuan commune, is the second generation to inherit his family's traditional profession. His facility currently has 4 products that have been certified as 4-star OCOP. These products are sold in many large supermarket chains. The quality of the products is known to many people, so the consumption output has increased by 40% compared to before. "We expect the products of the craft village to be widely promoted in terms of brand, promoting economic development. Along with that, households will join hands to preserve the space of the craft village, cultural traditions associated with rural tourism," said Mr. Hung.

Chau Khe gold and silver handicraft village in Thuc Khang commune (Binh Giang) is famous nationwide for its gold and silver jewelry products with many rich designs and models. The craft village was formed more than 500 years ago, from the early Le Dynasty. The history of the village also recorded that Minister of Justice Luu Xuan Tin - a man of the village was assigned by the king to be in charge of casting silver bars for domestic currency. The villagers passed down the secret of the craft from generation to generation and developed it to this day. And to preserve and develop the craft village, especially to compete with products from other places, each Chau Khe jewelry product must have its own unique qualities. The secret is that each product often has a sophisticated feature that can only be handcrafted by skillful hands combined with the wonderful creativity of each artisan in the village.

To meet the market demand, the craftsmen in the village must constantly research and create the best and most beautiful products to meet the demands of the domestic and foreign markets. One of the difficult products that only highly skilled and experienced craftsmen can make is the dragon head ring, S-shaped silver necklace and heart-shaped pattern of Mr. Pham Dinh Binh. This is a product that has been recognized as a 3-star OCOP.

The "One Commune One Product" (OCOP) program has created a new vitality for craft villages in Hai Duong. The development of craft villages helps increase people's income, narrowing the income gap for the poor in rural areas. Moreover, the development of craft villages also creates conditions for connecting communities, developing traditional cultural and historical values, preserving artistic quintessence, and passing it down from generation to generation.
