The ASEAN Future Forum 2025 (AFF 2025), an important multilateral event chaired by Vietnam, will be held in Hanoi from February 25 to 26, 2025.
With the theme “Building a united, inclusive and resilient ASEAN region in a changing world”, the forum is an opportunity for leaders, experts, businesses and partners to discuss the development orientation of the region.
The ASEAN Future Forum is an initiative announced by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the 43rd ASEAN Summit held in September 2023 in Indonesia. This is Vietnam's first 1.5-channel multilateral forum, connecting the government, scholars, businesses and international organizations. The main goal of the AFF is to create an open space for proposing ideas, promoting cooperation among ASEAN countries, and affirming Vietnam's leading role in the region and globally.
Sharing information at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs press conference on the afternoon of February 13, Mr. Trinh Minh Manh - Acting Director of the Institute for Strategic Studies, Diplomatic Academy, said that in the first organization in April 2024, the Forum attracted the attention, response and widespread support of ASEAN countries and the international community.
Following the success of last year's conference, AFF 2025 is expected to continue to be a place to shape practical policies to respond to global challenges such as climate change, geopolitical conflicts and the 4.0 industrial revolution.
For Vietnam, this event is even more meaningful, as it is held at very important times: the 80th anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the 30th anniversary of Vietnam's accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the 10th anniversary of the formation of the ASEAN Community and also the year ASEAN will adopt the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh is expected to chair the opening session and deliver a speech at AFF 2025. Notably, more than 500 delegates have registered to attend the Forum in person, including senior leaders in the ASEAN bloc, along with ambassadors, leading experts, representatives of businesses, international organizations and reporters both at home and abroad.
The ASEAN Future Forum 2025 is scheduled to take place over 2 days with 5 official plenary sessions and many important sideline activities.
On the morning of the first day (February 25), the Forum's pre-events will take place at the Diplomatic Academy, including the photo exhibition "Vietnam's 30-year journey to join ASEAN" and parallel thematic talks on "Women, Peace and Security: Digital Transformation for Sustainable Peace", "Promoting Smart Agriculture for Regional Food Security"...
On the afternoon of February 25, AFF 2025 officially took place at Melia Hotel with the Opening Session attended and delivered a speech by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, followed by two plenary sessions discussing “Major trends affecting ASEAN and the world by 2035” and “Strengthening ASEAN’s fundamental principles to respond to future challenges”. The first working day ended with a Gala Dinner.
On the second day (February 26), four plenary sessions of the Forum will take place, starting with the High-level Plenary Session with the participation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and senior leaders of several ASEAN countries and partners. The successive plenary sessions will include three topics: “Sub-regional cooperation towards promoting self-reliance and sustainable development”, “Governance of emerging technologies to ensure comprehensive security” and “ASEAN’s role in connecting and promoting peace in a fragmented world”. Interspersed between the plenary sessions will be a working lunch with the theme “ASEAN embracing the future: Mastering emerging technologies”. The Closing Session will take place in the afternoon of the same day.
The plenary sessions all emphasized practical solutions, from strengthening intra-bloc connectivity to managing risks from artificial intelligence, blockchain, etc. In particular, the Mekong sub-regional cooperation, CLMV (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam) is expected to promote balanced development.
Vietnam’s hosting of the ASEAN Future Forum 2025 demonstrates its efforts to actively contribute to the multilateral cooperation mechanism. The event not only enhances ASEAN’s position in the international arena but is also an opportunity for Vietnam to introduce its development achievements, attract investment and strengthen relations with partners.
In a volatile world context, AFF 2025 promises to be a “beacon” guiding the way, connecting a common vision for a united, creative and sustainable Southeast Asia.
