The 2023-2024 school year's excellent student exam has 5,812 candidates from 70 units participating in the following subjects: Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature, History, Geography, English, Russian, French and Chinese.
The examination board selected 3,359 prize-winning candidates (accounting for 55.79%), an increase of 1,076 prize-winning candidates compared to the previous school year. Last year, the number of candidates participating in the exam was 4,589, of which 2,283 won prizes (accounting for 49.75%).
Among the localities, Hanoi leads with a total of 184 prize-winning contestants, Ho Chi Minh City with 110, followed by Hai Phong, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh with 98, 90, and 89 prize-winning contestants respectively.

According to the new competition regulations in 2023, the total number of prizes, from Encouragement and above, shall not exceed 60% of the number of contestants, of which the total number of First, Second, and Third prizes shall not exceed 60% of the total number of prizes, and the number of First prizes shall not exceed 5% of the total number of prizes.
The marking of the exam was organized by the Ministry of Education and Training in accordance with the regulations of the exam to ensure safety, seriousness, accuracy, objectivity and fairness. According to the regulations of the exam, within 15 days from the date of announcement of the results, candidates have the right to request a review of the exam.
Also from this year, in addition to granting certificates to the winning students, the remaining students will also be recognized with certificates of participation in the exam.
The regulation that the number of students winning prizes this year increased by 10% compared to last year has motivated and encouraged students to make efforts in studying and practicing. The results of the exam and the ranking of prizes show that the number of students winning prizes this year has covered all localities across the country. Some mountainous and border localities with difficult socio-economic conditions have begun to have students achieving the highest rankings in the exam.
The national competition for excellent students aims to motivate and encourage teachers and students to promote their creativity, teach well, and study well; contribute to promoting the improvement and enhancement of teaching and learning quality, the quality of management and direction of educational management levels; at the same time, discover students with aptitude for subjects to create a source of training, realizing the goal of training talents for the country.
According to the plan, in March 2024, the Ministry of Education and Training will organize an exam to select high school students for national teams to compete in regional and international Olympics in 2024, for the subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Informatics.
