Spain Striker Antoine Griezmann scored in extra time to help Atletico beat Real 4-2 in the Copa del Rey round of 16, nearly ten days after losing to the same opponents in the Spanish Super Cup.
Before the match, Griezmann was honored as the player with the most goals in Atletico Madrid's history. He scored his 174th goal for Atletico in the defeat to Real in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final on January 10, thereby breaking the old record of 173 goals of Luis Aragones - a legend who played for Atletico from 1964-1974 and passed away in 2014. The French striker received a framed shirt with the number 174 and took a souvenir photo with his wife Erika Choperena and three children.

About nine minutes later, Atletico extinguished their city club's hopes of a comeback when Memphis Depay released Rodrigo Riquelme to score a cross-corner finish to make it 4-2. Both Depay and Riquelme were substitutes who came on in extra time.
This result helped Atletico "avenge" the 3-5 defeat against Real in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final more than a week ago. At Al Awwal Stadium, Riyadh that day, the two teams drew 3-3 and also dragged each other into extra time, where Real made a difference by scoring two goals thanks to two late substitutes, Joselu and Brahim Diaz.
A similar story played out at the Metropolitano last night, with the two teams still level after regular time. Since Diego Simeone took charge of Atletico, eight of the 13 Madrid derbies in all competitions have gone to extra time. In the previous 22 games, Real and Atletico had only gone to extra time once - in the 1975 Copa del Rey final.

Real started better with Jude Bellingham hitting the crossbar in the 11th minute and Vinicius and Rodrygo's one-on-one chances saved by goalkeeper Jan Oblak, but it was Atletico who took the lead. In the 39th minute, Antonio Rudiger's header accidentally turned into an assist for Samuel Lino to break free and finish with a one-touch cross to open the scoring. Real equalised in stoppage time when Oblak made a poor start and scored an own goal from Luka Modric's free-kick.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Atletico retaking the lead in the 57th minute. Eduardo Camavinga made a poor interception into the box, before Andriy Lunin came out and deflected the ball off Rudiger, who rebounded it. Alvaro Morata then fired into an empty net, scoring his sixth goal in 11 games against Real in all competitions - the same number as he has against Sevilla in 14.
The Royal team continued to show their mettle with an equalizer in the 82nd minute, when Bellingham's cross hit an Atletico defender and changed direction for substitute striker Joselu to head into an empty net. But in extra time, Atletico took the better chance to advance to the quarter-finals of the King's Cup.
